One sure thing that a luser will say to you when you criticize his shitty operating system goes something along the lines of "but at least I don't get any viruses."
Good for you dude. I don't get any viruses from your mom either. I'm protected. So please cease and desist your blabbering. Are you trying to convice me that not getting any viruses is a symbol of high quality of your choice of software? The fact that you're attributing that characteristic to Linux has already earned you a spot on my hate list.
Besides, I can make my computer immune to viruses. Just watch. Pop! Did you see that? I unplugged my network cable.
The luser wretches, "Oh but that makes your computer useless!" Yeah, well so does putting Linux on it. What's your point?
The truth is, an OS's low virus infection rate in and of itself means jack shit. I can write the code for 10 OS's that don't get viruses for you in 3 minutes. Fuck, that's faster than Stanley Jobson.
Macs don't get viruses either. Because like your OS, they're a small part of the installed base.
But actually, what no one talks about is that writing a virus for Linux is really hard. And that's not necessarily a good thing.
The luser whales, "OMG, But how can that be? BBQ!"
You see, a virus needs to make certain assumptions about your platform. Certain libraries existing, with particular ABI's. Certain data being accessible through particular API's. In other words, a common set of core components that are available on every install of your system so that the virus's code can be small and compact and yet infect as many machines as possible.
Wait, this sounds familiar. Oh yea, that's right: real software needs that too. Why is there no proprietary software for Linux? because for all practical purposes DEPLOYMENT IS IMPOSSIBLE. The Linux market is so small that there's no point going after it unless you try to support all Linux deployments. Hmm, well what does that mean? At least 3-4 major distros, which all have multiple versions of the past few years with different kernels and different libraries and different versions of GTK and different ways to integrate into the start menu, and different broken versions of evolution. Fuck me! Sounds like awesome fun. I'm glad people have all these choices. They can have another choice: FUCK OFF! I DON'T WANT YOUR FUCKING HIPPIE MONEY!
"The web is the future of application delivery." Yea, good one dude. I see Google making fistfulls of dollars with that idea, but what the fuck are you doing with it? Go ahead, cling to your Linux like it's the only thing that might ever give you sexual pleasure... if you could only find the right compilation flags (btw, did you try -fuckme?) Maybe web-apps are the future. But I'm pretty sure it's at least 5-10 years out, so have fun hacking on your ATI drivers until then.

121 flames:
The most laughable thing about open source systems like linux is that they aren't even better when you want to work with open source languages.
Take Python for example. There's no nightmare of make install anything and pray you have the right libs. Nearly all the popular python modules are bundled with installers and up to date with the latest Python and using the latest Python is not going to risk to break your OS like you'd do if you change your default python install on a distribution that has some dependence on it. When you have gathered a development environment that suits your need, you can burn everything on a CD and use it on any windows computer you want to, no need to care about stupid distribution corner cases.
Linux for the desktop is not ready until I can take an app and share it on any other computer without having to care for what version of system libraries or whatever the fuck the linux distribution does. It has to just work and shut the hell up.
plus, localization is at a laughing state for years, and until it's all fixed to every corner with meaningful translation, non english users will be laughing at it. (crappy font, crappy input dictionary, crappy translation)
I hate localizations but not only free software ones. Translations are always done by grammar nazis who go out of their way in France to use words that no one working in computing use except for themselves. They hate so much words of English origin they do their best to use french versions that would make you feel shameful should you pronounce them out loud.
Freetards like the dudes at Debian are worse than professional translators at that game though. I shiver at the thought of reading the french stuff on debian.org.
As for crappy fonts they are not only crappy when reading text written in a foreign language. They are crappy even for english. The default fonts on Vista are much better and the default fonts on OS X are the most aesthetically appealing (but I do find them somewhat blurry).
Fortunately Windows has evolved far beyond the puny concept of libraries.
PS. I'm missing xcbasefh32.dll for some app, can anyone plz help me?
my email: johnyhaxor@gmail.com
PPS. Oh, nevermind, I just had to download the ENTIRE software package again.
I had a discution about this with a Linux fan long ago, his solution was that every software vendor should provide the source code of their applications, in that way everybody would be able to compile it or fix it if it has compatibility problems.
I cannot argue with some one who thinks like that.
Must be tough when you have to post anonymous comments on your own blog.
Ramsees: I cannot argue with someone (yes, someone is one word) who cannot spell discussion, also, is your name supposed to be Ramses, or is your name as illogical as your argument?
I now know your secret identity. You are... Mark Shuttleworth.
I am a Linux fan & programmer. And I agree with you. Compatibility is a major PITA for me.
Thanks to all who posted, I needed a good laugh. I would point out all the inconsistencies and pat decisions to ignore the problems on your own OS-of-choice, but we've all been there.. enjoy your sense of superiority while it lasts.
When you really start working in IT, and realize it's the same thing in all OSes, I'll smile while you reminisce about this. Until then, I will listen to your wonderful naivete and hope your illusions don't come crashing down on you like every OS out there.
PS: I snorted milk out of my nose at your use of the "DEPLOYMENT IS IMPOSSIBLE" myth.. kudos! I had forgotten that I used to say exactly the same thing until I actually started developing systems software. Thanks for taking me back.
We don't have as many viruses since *nix is better by design period. And considering most windows users run as admins they turn there machines into slaves ready to be raped. UAC is a joke.
As far as compatibility is concerned windows is the problem. Proprietary formats restrict users to one product. Try opening an open format like odf in office or play an ogg in windows media player.
Linux manages to play wmv and handle docs just fine. What's taking windows to long to do the same?
But, I guess with windows you get to have the pleasure of buying a new machine every couple of months just so you can run aero better. I don't even have to compare compiz to aero since compiz wins 100x over.
One of my friend is a anti-virus addicted, downloading anti-viruses, patches, keys. And the funniest thing is viruses come from this crack sites. So try scanning, deleting, formatting...
But he loves the way it is. Yes it's much fun when you're on windows.
And I am reading, commenting this blog because I have time to kill.
There's plenty of proprietary software for Linux, sweetheart.
I never understood how stupid people must be to get viruses under Windows. I have been using my XP on an admin account without any antivirus for 4 years and I have yet to see my system infected with any malware. Only thing I do is sticking to basic security rules. PS. amazing blog. Thanks!
Windows is a Virus!
Hehe, I'm using p's computer and he doesn't know yet, what an idiot!
"Why is there no proprietary software for Linux?"
Here's my list: rar, flash, maya, nero, opera, skype, unreal, doom, neverwinter nights, wolfenstein...
"because for all practical purposes DEPLOYMENT IS IMPOSSIBLE."
Is just proved your truth is just that: __your__ truth. If you want to believe it, fine.
If there's no more proprietary software in GNU/Linux is mostly because it is not welcomed. GNU is all about freedom and proprietary defeats that purpose.
You're right on the money about commercial software here.
I wrote a primarily-Linux book, OCaml for Scientists, that turned out to be a nice little earner. So we tried shipping commercial Linux software a few years back. The results were abysmal. Everything is stacked against commercial software on Linux. Linux users have no money. Libraries under Linux are poor and uninteroperable. The tools (e.g. IDEs) are poor. Essential foundations like .NET are non-existent.
For example, our customers demand decent user interfaces and we demand decent programming languages. Under Linux, the best programming languages (OCaml, Haskell, SML) all have awful IDE support, awful GUI libraries and brittle bindings that essentially require software to be recompiled on every target machine if it is to work reliably. On Windows, F# is a technically superior language with infinitely better IDE support and industrial-strength GUI libraries that are seamlessly integrated into everything (e.g. the drag and drop GUI designer in VS) and the .NET platform ensures reliable deployment.
We were forced to ditch Linux in order to survive as a company. I would not hesitate to advise other companies to do the same.
Some companies keep battling on with Linux though. Mathematica 6 from Wolfram Research is my favourite example of an awesome piece of software (well worth paying for on Windows) that is unnecessarily hampered on Linux:
http://linuxexpert.wordpress.com/2007/08/25/how-to-install-mathematica-6linuxubuntu/
Incidentally, your last commentor wrote "GNU is all about freedom and proprietary defeats that purpose.". I want the freedom to use and build both free and commercial software on the same OS. Preventing me from buying and selling software is not "freedom".
@flying frog consultancy ltd.
Write commercial free software. That's welcomed. But since you say .net is essential, you are a moron that probably can't make a decent app and then you blame the language.
>> But since you say .net is essential, you are a moron that probably can't make a decent app and then you blame the language.
That's the spirit! Go ahead, call everyone who disagrees with you a moron (even Linus, Peace be Upon Him did so while bashing SVN).
Those developers want .NET? How dare they, don't they know it's tainted with M$ eeeevil? Looook, I want an IDE! What a moron, only wimps and girlie men use IDEs, use vi you imbecile! (its so much better anyway)
Bash them, stomp, crush, burn!
This is Unix way in all its glory, nes't pas?
People need to understand that the FHS made their life harder.
If they stop spreading files and start to use AppDirs (or a similar approach like GoboLinux does) then 95% of these problems will go away.
@anonymous
//PS. I'm missing xcbasefh32.dll for some app, can anyone plz help me?//
Which app was that for again, on which version of Windows?
wait, it never happened, and you're pulling it out of your linux-raped ass? Thought so.
I think the stupid gay behind this blogshit has nothing better to do than fuck himself hard with a knife, Microsoft is simple a symbol of making money, and NOT really good nor inspiring in making reliable software, operative systems, or what so FUCKING ever. The truth is that the core of Windows is based in SIMPLICITY and not in SECURITY!! The evidence is the fact that almost SERVERS, MAINFRAMES, NASA COMPUTERS, GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS, THE BIGGEST ENTERPRISES IN THE DAMN WORLD, AND EVEN THE MOST, IF NOT ALL, THE HACKERS OF THE PLANET.... USES UNIX BASED SYSTEMS!! SO, GO FUCK YOURSELF TO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND TAKE YOUR BULLSHITS UP YOUR ASS!!!!!!!!!!
Microsoft is not a symbol of making money, it is a company. Stop embarrassing yourself with your *nix zealotry and get a clue.
Why in heavens name are you devoting all this time to writing shitty articles about an operating system you hate?
I just can't believe you can't find a more useful thing to do.
So just use Windows if you want to, and show some matureness like other Windows and Linux/Mac users.
Lets treat each other as adults: if I hate Ford and only want to drive BMW, i'll drive BMW, and let you drive Ford without taking you down.
I can only give you 2 tips:
1 GROW UP
2 Find a better way to fill you time (eg collecting stamps)
Roel from the Netherlands
Why must it always be an anti-Microsoft retort whenever a problem in Linux is pointed out? Why can't you just address the issue in Linux and fix it instead of saying "XYZ in Windows has problems too!" In a way, aren't you yourselves proving LinuxHater's points on this issue?
I just gotta say, I'm a Mac user interested in Linux, but not anymore now.
> I unplugged my network cable.
...and better leave it that way :]
> Yeah, well so does putting Linux on it.
Probably not for your tiny mind, but I'd better leave my bunch of linuxen there too.
So, wanna bet? I leave Linux on my systems, you leave yours unplugged. Who catches the virus first, you or me.
When those all-too-common crummy ssh brute force attacks first began on my system years ago, I did a lot of OS fingerprinting, and guess what? Most of the attacks came from linux machines. No, that doesn't mean hackers are hardcore linux users, it means the machines that have become victims of these puny worms are compromised linux hosts.
Lately, I took the time to find out what kind of OS is the source of the really crummy web-based attacks, and yup, you guessed it, linux.
Realistically, most of these exploit crummy php web applications that crummy programmers write, and crummier people actually run. That these crummy exploits actually work and spread ontop of linux systems shows how crummy linux can be for common mom-and-pop machines.
maybe if apache was chroot by default, and passwd would try really really hard to make you use a decent password like openbsd has been doing for, fuck, like 8 years? This wouldn't be an issue.
of course, that takes all the fun out of setting up your mommie's new webserver with a mouse and a snappy 1024x768 graphical bootloader.
A gentoo fanatic I know once had his gentoo machine compromised. He fixed it by untarring a stage1 tarball and running update, and re-setting the bin user back to bin, instead of the uid 0 it had mistakinly been changed to. I wish he got rm -rf /'d instead, like the classy hackers do.
I use Linux, Windows, and Mac. Honestly, each has it's differences...but my needs are spread out, and I end up using all of them for something the other can't do. I never get all this Win-haters and Linux-haters business: sure, MS and Linux have differences, but in the end, I think they really are equal. I'm not just trying to preach, I really believe that one is no superior to the other. What my Windows system lacks in reliability, it easily makes up for with it's wonderful media capabilities (I run XP Media). While my Linux OS has great stability, it horrendously lacks high-powered media editing.
As for viruses: Can't find favor for either. Sure, I didn't have to install any protection for my Linux, and I did with Windows (I do a lot of web browsing, can't be too safe). But come on, it took 2 minutes to put it on. That is nothing. Certainly nothing to hate Windows about.
When it comes down to it, I think that it's all really about choice. Linux? Windows? Mac? It's all about your needs. I have heard that many Linux users go around bragging, and I think that is wrong. Just as obscenely bragging or hating any OS is wrong.
"Linux users have no money."
I take great offense to this generalization that Linux users are poor, and that they use Linux because most distros and software are free. If you can afford a computer, you just as easily get Windows, since most computers come pre-installed with it. I doubt that many Linux users went Linux for financial reasons.
Linux the OS can be pretty cool...
Linux zealots on the other hand, are a real bunch of 'tards
Nada de lo que dices tiene sentido, pero me has entretenido jajajajja. Pobre idiota
At least we don't have viruses
That's because
- most of the virus-writers come from the OSS world
- the yield/impact is too small
Wait until this linux joke starts penetrating the market ... the viral coders will have a field-day. Linux is spaghetti code? Wait until they're going to start writing ad-hoc patches to stop the malware, they'll bring the word spaghetti to a level that'll give Mama Miracoli multiple orgasms.
//Good for you dude. I don't get any viruses from your mom either. I'm protected. So please cease and desist your blabbering. Are you trying to convice me that not getting any viruses is a symbol of high quality of your choice of software?//
You don't get any viruses because you're PAYING for a bullshit piece of software that does it for you. How sad is it that Windows is so insecure, it needs third party software to fix its flaws? How sad is that!
//Besides, I can make my computer immune to viruses. Just watch. Pop! Did you see that? I unplugged my network cable. The luser wretches, "Oh but that makes your computer useless!"//
Well, yeah, you disphit, that'll work on any machine, no matter the operating system. You've proved nothing. You're immune, but you can't go online to update your pissy hater's blog.
//Macs don't get viruses either. Because like your OS, they're a small part of the installed base.//
You're wrong there, too. The sole reason Macs don't get viruses is not because they're a small part of the installed base, but because they utilize a good operating system that's fucking secure on its own.
You're so pathetic.
no man writing virus for linux is easier just use some syscall thats all you need for a simple virus

Writing a virus for Linux is easy.
Just use a decent scripting language (do it "right" and it'll even work on OSX as well).
The main reason why Linux does not have much desktop malware is because it's not worth targeting Desktop Linux. You might as well target Windows machines - where there are enough users willing to enter passwords from spam email to extract malware from encrypted zipfiles AND run that malware. Nowadays it is hard to infect Windows without requiring the user to actually do something in the first place.
The typical Desktop Linux security model is primitive and has no sandboxing. Anything UserX runs can do whatever the UserX account can do. This is stupid and primitive.
Windows with software firewalls can do better than that.
Linux has AppArmor and SELinux, but these are not ready for Desktop users.
It appears to be worth targeting Linux Servers though - you can infect servers without user intervention - since servers run services.
Ok yeah now you totally are trolling or from Egypt cause you are in denial. Having to install antivirus, antispyware, and all the other anti's that you have to on your Windows box (much less pay for them) makes your Windows box useless. The very fact that the average unpatched system gets hacked in 14 minutes means you are going to get hacked before you even have time to download your patches. So what are you going to do? Expect every user to have a second machine prepatched to download patches for all their other machines?? What kind of dreamworld do you think Joe six-pack and his mom live in?
Linux fulfills the needs of the average user (minus games... get an Xbox luser) and in a secure way. Some things are familiar, some things they may have to relearn. Vista and the new Office had them relearn everything too, so whats the big deal? You act like this doesn't happen in your world? Again, total denial.
Well, the point is, actually, that Linux "fans" are idiots. Most of the time. I never use anything else than Linux, but I can completely understand why most people have problems with it. You have to understand that Linux is developed by programmers that have more or less their own intentions in mind. And the real Linux geeks just don't care about users. Actually, Linux does not need users. Linux does not depend on profit. It will remain long time after Windows has long gone dead. I, personally, as a Linux "geek", just don't give a shit about someone using it or not. I'm happy when someone does NOT use it and I don't have to hear his whining.
Have a nice day. And stop arguing like fundamentalists.
Java is a pretty decent deployment platform - well, as soon as we get decent dependency management (OSGI!)
Let's Face It
Geeks like Linux for it’s security. Let’s face it, geeks like to tinker with things. It’s what makes a geek a geek; simply the need to fidgit with something for completely no reason at all other than curiosity. Most Linux geeks come from some type of Redmond OS. Unfortunately, curiosity kills the geek on Microsoft boxes. If a geek sees something on the web that might be cool it gets downloaded and ran. Every geek, whether they have made the switch to Linux yet or not, has re-cleaned/restored/reimaged/reinstalled a Windows machine on several occasions because of their curiosity. They have also done this several times on computers owned by not so computer literate relatives. This is not a bash session on Windows (pun intended), I’m in no way a Windows hater. I use XP at work, and it works there where it has an entire department to support it; it just doesn’t work at my house. To be honest, the first few restores of a Windows box for a geek is fun. It’s a curious event in and of itself, but geeks also like to move on once we know where a specific rabbit hole goes. So, unless a geek wants to spend their hard earned green backs on anti-virus, anti-spam, firewall, and other various software and license fees each year, and has the ability [or the want] to purchase a new computer every two years just to be able to run these pieces of software efficiently on top of an OS that already requires a hefty machine, the latest Windows is not an option. With most Linux distros getting large updates about every 6 months, it’s easy for a geek to keep occupied with the latest and greatest, with out having to worry about resources, both system wise and financially.
Note: I am not starting a flame war here. I do not believe Linux distributions are more secure than Windows on a technical or programmatical level. However, there is no denying that virus, spyrus, spamus, and adus software is more prevalently developed for Microsoft distributions at this place in time. And, yes, I just made those words up; I wonder if they will become viral…
"It’s what makes a geek a geek; simply the need to fidgit with something for completely no reason at all other than curiosity."
No. The need to fidgit with something constantly is called a neurosis.
If you can't do anything on Linux, I wonder what I've been doing for the last decade?
Oh yeah, reading moronic blogs by discontents. At least Linux is functional enough for that.
Linux 'tards has this annoying superiority complex and they truly believed that using Linux has increased their IQ three-fold. What a laugh.
Does no one here get the fact that Linux Hater actually likes and uses Linux? Huh? How could someone know so much about the details of something without being an avid user? Is it not possible to love something and also be annoyed, frustrated, and irritated by it? I love Linux but am constantly annoyed and frustrated by many of the same problems outlined by Linux Hater.
Even if you unplug the LAN,if you plug in a USB device or any other removable device, You may get avirus that someone else got which installed itself onto it and runs using an autorun.inf :)
This is one of the largest piles of crap I've seen in a LONG time..
First of all, educate yourself: http://www.mylro.org/content/view/1088/52/
Now FYI:
1. I work in a software company that *GASP* like Sun, IBM and many others out there develop on LINUX (dum dum dum-dum!), selling software that runs on linux and making money too!
Oh and they're not selling to Jo-schmos like yourself, they sell to LARGE, multi-million dollar corporations.
2. I use Ubuntu at home, it's as good as Windows XP only I don't need to pirate software to make whatever I need.
3. Wine runs windows games, it installs them like in windows, runs them like in windows, would even do the dishes if windows did that. And yes, Wine runs even Photoshop.
Bottom line, you're an uneducated ignorant person with lots of attitude and little else beyond that. Enjoy your puny and insignificant little life and blog while they last, till some virus kills either, or both :)
>> 2. I use Ubuntu at home, it's as good as Windows XP only I don't need to pirate software to make whatever I need.
For the umpteenth time: this may come as a shock, but all the good free apps run happily in Windows.
---
>> 3. Wine runs windows games, it installs them like in windows, runs them like in windows, would even do the dishes if windows did that. And yes, Wine runs even Photoshop.
Only a wee bit slower, right? And crashes at times, right? And not everything runs, and you can't be really sure every single functionality of the app will work, right?
But that's okay, after all - its free, right?
In short: Linux + Wine = poor man's Windows.
For the umpteenth time: this may come as a shock, but all the good free apps run happily in Windows.
WOW so adobe has released photoshop for free now? My god it used to be a $600 application.
>> WOW so adobe has released photoshop for free now? My god it used to be a $600 application.
My friend, are you an idiot?
The blog + comments are giving me a great laugh.
Summary:
Windows people just get on and do things.
Linux people spend most of the day moaning about the windows people.
I am a windows guy because i have no interest in libries, kernels and recompiling things to make them work. I tried Ubuntu ... but it was just trying to rip off Windows anyway so i thought why not just be using the original :) + when i plugged my camera in it asked which camera to import from (i had only plugged one in) and was asking me which USB port (/dev/usb/something or /dev/usb/something else) ... WTF? That is only one example.
Linux. Made by geeks for geeks & otherwise pointless.
I've always wondered about the “*nux is inherently more secure” claim. Anyway, whoever's writing the Linux Haters blog is anything but a Linux hater. As has been said before, this is someone who's clearly quite conversant with Linux. Linux Haters is now one of my favourite blogs - and I'm no Linux hater!
So I have to pay an anti-virus software to slow down my machine? Oh, this way I will be protected! Why do I have to pay for that if I can be virus-free in Ubuntu without installing extra programs? I remember the time when I had to format and reinstall everything every 4-6 months. No more.
The thing about operating systems is that them have to suit your needs. Ubuntu suits my needs better than Windows. Windows is better for my wife. She uses Windows, I Ubuntu. But I have to clean every month temp files, registry garbage and some spyware and viruses in her computer. Mine, no need.
vista has UAC so u shouldn't get any viruses in that either :)
Be careful with UAC. It's a big improvement in Vista (and some kind of copy of the system of root and user privileges and restrictions in linux, but certainly more complicated). But it also causes compatibility problems with some older apps, which can't register properly ocx and dll's they need. And, by the way, you know there are virus for Vista, reported by the biggest antivirus companies. Vista is a great improvement (for 250€ in the Home Basic Edition it MUST be), but don't get wrong. Vista is stronger, but not the strongest OS against viruses, trojans, etc. And UAC should be improved a lot in future versions to be really efficient, and not just a copy of linux ideas.
Anyway, thumbs up for Microsoft with Vista, they are in the path to build a really good OS.
250 euros for Vista Home Basic? That's a rip off! Home Basic sells for less then 100 dollars where I live (and that's NOT US or Canada or EU for that matter)
Yes, you're right, it's a rip off, but here in Spain it's this way. The cheapest Vista Home Basic SP1 I've seen is 200€.
Wonder why piracy rates are so high here...
And a recent comparison between prices in US and Spain shows that computers are in general 35% more expensive in Spain.
I was tired of this situation, tired of piracy, cracks and having to pay so much. So first I tried freeware software and, hey, a lot of free programs beat their counterparts. Then I tried Linux and... guess what? Bye bye piracy, viruses, reinstalling the OS every few months, HD fragmentation... Linux suits far more better my needs than Windows.
Maybe my needs will change some day, so I will have to go back to Windows, or try a Mac. But I highly doubt it.
So...? I should be a M$ bitch?
Or may I become a pirate bitch like all of linuxhaters blog fans?
Back in my younger days, I could afford to spend three days hacking apps together to save a couple of bucks. As a college student, I had more time than money.
Fast forward a decade and I'm not a manager in a company with fast approaching deadlines. Folks get to choose their OS of choice for everyday use where its MS, Apple, or Linux (yea, i know "Linux" is not a company). Dev and QA need to test against various system configs. Let's take a look that the process for installing VMWare Server (or VMWare Fusion for our OSX users)
Windows - Double click setup, hit next a few times, type in license key, reboot, login, double click VMWare icon, map to VM, and back to work. Time - 15 minutes
OSX - Double click DMG, fire off setup, click a few buttons, type in license key, reboot, loging, click VMWare icon, map to VM, and back to work. Time - 15 minutes
Linux - We'll use Ubuntu as an example since it the Distro du Jour at the office. Gunzip file, navigate to directory, launch Perl script, dependancy error, Apt-Get, launch install Perl script, dependancy error, Apt-get, launch install Perl script, dependancy error, Apt-get, launch install Perl script launch config Perl script, cryptic error, hit Ubuntu forum, mess with conf file, cryptic error, hit Ubuntu forum, mess with conf file, 2 x cryptic error, hit ubuntu forum, listen to Fedora fanboy give crap to Ubuntu fanbot, listen to Ubuntu fanboy give snide retort to Fedora fanboy, listen to Ubuntu fanbot and Fedora fanboy gang up on SUSE fanboy laughing at the chaos, listen to new Ubuntu civil war as factions form between Ubuntu and Kubuntu subsets, cryptic error, mess with permissions, hit Ubuntu forum, cyptic error, mess with conf files, enter license key, INIT 6, login click on VMware icon, cryptic error, hit Ubuntu forum, Apt-get, cyptic error, hit Ubuntu forum, mess with conf file, listen to Dev/QA folks on Windows and OSX system complain that they are doing all the work, try to ignore background debate on Apt-get vs. up2Date, fire off VMWare, connect to VMs, mess with conf files to get VMWare tools working properly, INIT 6, login, files off VMware, back to work
Total time 3.5 days
Listen to Linux people proclaim how much money they have saved for each copy of Windows XP ($125) and OSX 10.5 ($99) not bought.
Oh, repeat again for 3.5 days with new errors because there is no standard package that allows the above exercise to be repeated.
I am not awaiting the standard barrage of flames from Slashdot people telling me how I should have written an app using Ruby on Rails or compiled my own version of XEN and write a API that allows me to convert our collection of virtual machines into a compatible format.
VKC: Installing virtual Box proprietary on ubuntu: Download .deb, double click .deb, click ok when it asks you to compile kernel addon, wait for that (nice GUI progress bar) now, virtual box appears on Applications menu.
Can emulate windows, it is faster than vmware, got USB support, seamless windows, etc, etc, etc.
So, perhaps vmware is to blame for not doing a mildly correct work on the installing procedure, not a shocker that virtualBox tops vmware in everything including how easy is it to install it on ubuntu, btw virtualbox also ships rpms for your rpm distros.
If you don't need the USB support, you can also just install virtualbox from the repository and that is FOSS, you can't beat that with your over expensive vmware that doesn't have half the features virtual Box has and is , as you just noticed, very hard to install.
Alexei: There are apps that run slower in WINE, however there are some that run faster, also, since 1.0 stability on important apps has become a fact that you Linux bashers will need to learn to accept :) Windows is the outdated idiot's WINE.
Whence your hate come from? How Linux harmed you personally, if you hate it so much? I use different OSes, and I found that every OS has different ways to use, and they all have their own pros and cons in different kinds of use. Here some cool examples of Linux use:

Hate is really harmful thing =)
LH dude:
Hard to see how Linux supporters can claim no viruses - just check all the "security updates" pushed down every few days by various distros' update managers (the ones that bother) - sobering reading to see that so many different potential exploits exist, and leaves you wondering what else needs to be fixed.
And let us not forget that Mac OS X is based on yet another unix variant, Free BSD. I suppose it shows what a commercially-supported desktop/server unix can be when centrally managed, eh?
I am not a hard-core Linux fan, but more in the "sympathizer" camp - like to fool with it to see what it can do to satisfy my computer tinkering inclination (as well as basic utility for web browsing, email, text docs and spreadsheets), hoping it will work, happy when it does, disappointed when it does not. It reinforces my professional use with my web admin job on Linux and Solaris servers.
I have a notebook PC with multi-boot: Ubuntu 8.0.4 (hate those cutesy critter names that give no clue to the versioning), Fedora 9 in another partition (till I decide what to play with in place of it), and Windows 2000. I fire up the W2K once or twice a week for a few occasional Windows-only apps, but find that most of the time Linux is all I need. W2K takes much longer to boot to a usable state, so I avoid it as much as possible, but it does have its uses.
I think you have a lot of valid points about Linux's/FOSS/GNU/etc software, and though I share a lot of those criticisms - all the incompatibilities, not only between distros, but from one version to another in the same distro, such as with Ubuntu, drive me nuts. Like you, I do have something of a love/hate relationship with Linux, but apparently not as intense as yours (the nasty language is distracting/detracting). Still, I find it more useful than not for what I do with it.
I just found this site thanks to a pointer from Jeremy Allison in Linux Format magazine, and I think he, as well as others posting here, have a point that your intensity and knowledge indicate a very intimate acquaintance with Linux, and that you care about it in some weirdly/wildly exasperated fashion.
I think you could get more interest from thoughtful FOSS community members (forget the rest) in addressing the valid issues you raise if you toned down the language - unless of course you are like a recovering cult addict who engages in a personal vendetta against his former obsession with a new one in the opposite direction. Or do you think shock language will get positive results?
I intend to follow this blog to some extent to see if it does have any positive impact arising from serious discussion (unless I get gagged too much by the language...)

The same question can be reversed, how has Windows or OS X harmed u freetards personally?
All OS's have their pros and cons but linux has too many cons.
Isn't it obvious to everyone that Linux Hater is an avid Linux user. If you read his posts, it becomes clear that he has really good deep knowledge of the platform and seems to speak of which he knows.
Unlike the zealots that bust on M$. I constantly end up in convos with zealots that rail on with the same-old same-old and it becomes obvious that it has been a long time since they've been into Windows and if they do code it is as a hobbieist(sp?).
As a developer of enterprise level apps, I have to say, no one is producing better advancements and an insanely vast array of functionality for developers than M$. It's crazy where the .Net Framework is going. Now are they originators of everything they produce, no, but I don't care. I want to worry about solutions to my customers problems, notplumbing, legacy bloat, disperate library dependencies and incompatabilities. That's why I choose .Net and Mono!!!
what we have here is an ex-linux user [a depressed & angry one] who switch back to windows.
cool! one less.
Damn People! Why is it that the majority of Linux users hate Microsoft?
Is it because your mommy didn't hold you when you were a child, oh wait you must still be one for acting a fool in this blog!

Gimp is a free app for Linux also has a Windows version its easily as good and as expandable as Photoshop.
Open Office, runs on Windows or Linux easily as equal or better than Microsoft Office.
VLC Media Player runs on Linux or Windows and has much better functionality than Windows Media Player, has built in codecs btw so no problems.
As far as .Net, .Net is a framework for developing using several different languages. For that matter so is Rails, and Zend Platforms. There are many others.
Linux is more secure than Windows, but it is not totally secure. However you have wonderful Firewall packages such as apf and csf to install that manages ip tables. Useful tools such as rkhunter to check for root kits, or spyware. An avg has a good linux version if you feel like you need an antivirus package. Although you shouldn't have to.
Firefox 3 great browser, runs on Linux as well.
I use Linux for my ease of use for my job. When I work on Linux systems all the functionality I need is practically built into my system to connect to other computers. Including btw remote desktop to connect to Windows Servers I have to connect to.
Windows is for people who don't know anything about computers and just want to turn it on and go.
Linux is for techs who are tired of fixing Windows constantly.
How about bandwith? My connection has a bandwith threshhold. I am capped with 18g download, and 8 gig upload each month. When using Windows, my bandwith was constantly in the 80% range of being used. After switching to Linux, while using my system more than before, my bandwith never rose above 50%.
Linux's failing is there are too many distributions. If we could narrow the field down to three instead of over 50, than it could beat windows hands down.
I challenge you, name any software tool wise or app wise(not games) that you want on Windows and I can offer a better or equal one on Linux.

priceless, i could'nt have said it better. think about that you windows dullies
"I can write the code for 10 OS's that don't get viruses for you in 3 minutes."
Really? Then prove it!
"Macs don't get viruses either. Because like your OS, they're a small part of the installed base."
For Macs, this is true, but for Linux, it is not. Linux has a larger percentage in the server market - and that's where the money is. Think about it: If you write a Windows virus, you get maybe 2-3 credit card numbers per infection. If you write a Linux virus, however, you could get much, much more - Google and Paypal both run on Linux. Just these two combined would be more than enough motivation for a virus writer to infect them. But it doesn't happen. Why? Because it is designed so much more securely than Windows.
"But actually, what no one talks about is that writing a virus for Linux is really hard. And that's not necessarily a good thing."
This statement shows how little knowledge you posses... and that's not necessarily a good thing.
I'm not saying that Linux is the best, or even that everyone should use it - I just thought it should be noted how ignorant some people can be. You're not alone, though; many Linux users are worse than you when it comes to flaming an OS based on false information.
What a load of bullshit. Really, have you ever even fucking well used Linux?
For a start, the lack of viruses has almost nothing to do with the user base. People creating viruses are going to be targeting large business servers and the like, and guess what! Linux is one of the most widely used operating systems for servers! So in that case, why doesn't the entire internet come crashing down due to virus infections? Linux is based on Unix, which makes it incredibly hard to spread a virus around the file system. OK, so you could feasibly get something to run in the user's home directory and damage their files, but you could do that in OS X as well (which, incidentally, is also Unix based). But I must really stress - what would be the point? People who create viruses are generally out to line their pockets, not delete some idiot's photo collection. Once you elevate to root, it's possible that a rogue program can cause some level of damage to your system, but it would require the user to elevate it to root in the first place, idiot. "Oh, hi, I'm a virus, and I'm here to fuck up your computer and set everyone's homepages to CoolWebSearch.com, will you sudo su me?". Um, no. And don't try telling me that it can just pretend to be a legitimate program, because how many legitimate programs can you think of that you need to use on a daily basis that require you to authenticate yourself, that didn't come built into the distribution? Oh, right, you mean things like Windows Defender, Control Panel, Programs and Features, most antivirus software, almost everything except... an actual virus! UAC in Vista and Seven does absolutely nothing that can't be circumvented by any determined malware application. Try a Google search for "iReboot without UAC" and you'll see what I mean. If a legitimate program can do this in Windows, imagine what a virus could do. Now try this in Linux. It can't be done. The developers of iReboot had a service running as Administrator and a service running with normal privileges, and they simply communicated to get round UAC. On Linux, root daemons and user applications don't communicate directly with each other, so this kind of shit doesn't happen. Also, think of UAC like this. If you're running it as a limited user, it prompts you for a password to run an administrative program, which is all very well and good, but when you're running as an administrator, it just asks you for confirmation. That's all it does. You aren't authenticating or anything. You're just saying "yeah, go ahead and take full control of my system and not bother with even giving you my password to do so" until in the end the user simply grows complacent and just clicks "Allow" in every single UAC dialog s/he sees.
Another reason why Windows gets so many more viruses is due to the fact that any application can fuck with the entire filesystem. So when you lose valuable data because EasyPornDownloader.exe erased your MBR, don't come fucking well crying to me.
Oh, and by the way, about those APIs... Linux has the most feature rich APIs I've ever seen after developing on all of Win16, Win32, Mac OS X, and Linux. You can find functions for pretty much everything you want to do, and you very rarely have to declare any new ones yourself. As most of the libraries are open-source, it is easy for a new developer to understand the APIs that the contain, without needing to sift through tons of crap online documentation (MSDN, anyone?) You don't have to bloat your applications with shit-loads of libraries and the like because nine times out of ten, the libraries already exist on the system, and if they don't, there are hundreds of tools like apt-get that are ready to download them all for you. So don't you even dare to say that Windows has better APIs than Linux, because at that point, I will realise that you are actually too thick for me to bother even insulting you.
If you're reading this last little bit, one of three things has happened:
1) You actually read everything I had to say and have reached the end.
2) You couldn't be bothered to read it all so you just read the beginning and end, skipping the middle.
3) You are as linguistically illiterate as you are technically, and simply couldn't read what I had to say.

//Ok yeah now you totally are trolling or from Egypt cause you are in denial.
Yeah, you're right. The almost 90% of computer users use Windows because they get hacked in 14 minutes.
And I'm sure that you can tell me where you got that statistic from.
Do yourself a favor and DON'T pull stuff out of your ass when you can't think of an valid argument. That will just make things worse for you.
//Linux fulfills the needs of the average user
Delusional much?

Right. I should buy an Xbox despite the fact that I have an computer powerful enough to run current-gen PC games just so I can masturbate myself with the thought that I'm using the piece of shit that is Linux.
Are You Kidding?
Are you Linux Hater/Hitler?
I feel people don't want get freedom of Window's Vistha ( You know what Vistha means in Sanskrit).
My advise to owner of the blogger is study more about Linux first before commenting anything about Linux. You are talking about proprietary s/w on Linux, there are many, for instance Oracle RDBMS, 25% of Oracle RDBMS is on Linux. Big fortune company and and major Financial and Banking industry is hosting their ORALCE databases on Linux systems.
I don't want to spend much time of arguing with you guys, but mark my words in coming days Microsoft going to be History!!!
Wow. This site has to be the most obvious troll I've ever seen. Really? Viruses being hard to program for linux means that the API's must be shit and all messy? You dumbass. Or smart, sassy troll.... I can't decide. You really have no clue.... viruses are so hard to write for linux because the libraries etc that exist have been WRITTEN PROPERLY and therefore can't be exploited to run code with an elevated set of privileges, above that of the everyday user account... if you run your entire system as root, you're an idiot and asking for trouble.
An API that doesn't leave a system wide open to free-ranging propagation of malicious code isn't one that's "hard to program". It just means it's been written properly, and if you're too dumb to understand some fundamental security concepts, then you BELONG in the Windows world.

I love how LU calls so many people 'freetards' and 'lusers', quite obviously believing he himself is very intelligent and mature, and then bashes Linux as childishly as some Linux users bash Windows.
I would like to be the supporter of yours. Thank you for sharing such a nice article.

You see, Windows is great for the average user, and the tech support people that get paid per phone call. Linux is for more experienced users that actually use a computer for more then just email. If you are an average user and have a lot of money for support and crappy antivirus programs, then be my guest and spend money on an OS not worth the materials it takes to make the install CD.

That makes sense; a spammer likes this blog. LOL!
On a more serious note, though, I do find this blog interesting, even if I don't agree with most of it. Really, I think it is the FLOSS ultra-zealots that really give Linux most of its false promises, and unfounded support. Richard Stallman (head FLOSS dude) essentially thinks that proprietary software should face nuclear catastrophe, at least that's how I hear it. On the other hand, the way I understand it is that Linus Torvalds (original creator of Linux) doesn't really care either way about proprietary software, as long as he's not forced into utilizing it against his will.
