$$$ Cha-ching $$$

Let me let you in on a little secret. Someone has already figured out how to make tons of cash off of open source. And it's not your puny boy Red Hat.

While you guys take to your internet forums and irc channels and jerk each other off, someone is laughing all the way to the bank. It's surely not me (I wish, and besides, you guys with your fucking adblock), but it makes me laugh too, since you're also doing a lot of their work for them, while at the same time making wild proclamations that nobody gives a fuck about.

Who am I talking about? Apple.

You see, Apple ganked a bunch of your code, turned it into something that people want, put it in a pretty box, and is making CASH MONEY from it. Maybe you guys are happy with that. A PROPRIETARY company (oh god, no! please no!) making money from your free work. All I know is that if it were me, and I had written a bunch of code to benefit humankind and promote freedom, and saw it get totally fucked up by downstream stupidity, and then saw some company take it and make 24 gigadollars's a year with it, I'd be fucking pissed.

But you know what? I don't feel so bad, because Apple guys are geniuses. They simultaneously have one of the most widely-deployed yet significantly closed software platforms, and yet they're raping the open source community for all its code. At least someone's doing something useful with it.

But the best part is that it confuses OSStards. It makes them cry. "Oh my god! it's so~~ non-free! but it's so~~ pretty. Oh I know! let me buy a Mac, and then run Linux on it. That'll show them!"

But guys, do carry on. I really do enjoy the circus.

Shouldn't this be on the BSD hater's blog.
P.S. I just bet Microsoft's making some coin off that action, too.

While a lot of the OSX platform is OSS, a huge chunk of it isn't. They developed a lot of it in-house. Only the base system and parts of the printing system is part of the desktop version, and some of the servers for the Server OSX version. And besides, they are careful to use as little, or not at all, of GPL as possible. That's why they went with BSD/MIT where the original developers won't cry for having their code "stolen" by Apple. They would actually embrace Apple, and in fact, MANY of the people who had worked on BSD actually went to work for Apple afterwards!

But I hear ya. That's exactly it. Already back in 2002 I had said that to get something done properly, you should FORK the original OSS code and then integrate it properly and develop on top; A LOT.

Instead, all we get in the Linux market is half-assed half-companies creating "distros" by simply putting unintegrated parts together (usually in a half-assed way too), and when you ask them for some integration or new feature they tell you "talk to upstream".

Well, I fuck your upstream and your downstream.

Latest example: I made a bug report for Totem over 6 months ago to fix a much-visible bug (a menu item that does absolutely nothing, huzzaaah). They didn't reply for months, recently I had to get pissy off to get them to listen, and at the end, it's the usual shit: "Gstreamer doesn't support it, so until Gstreamer does, we can't do anything about it".

Given how fast Gstreamer development moves forward (it doesn't), we won't see proper de-interlacing on Totem for another 10 years.

Ok, off to my XP now. It just works. Unfortunately, de-interlacing is broken on Quicktime as well right now, for 5 months and counting (I did a bug report with Apple too recently, but at least I know that this is just a regression bug for Apple rather than a "the upstream doesn't support it", or a "I don't know how to implement that" problem).

You just figured this out?

ROFL!

I am coping this from gnu faq:

Does the GPL require that source code of modified versions be posted to the public?

The GPL does not require you to release your modified version, or any part of it. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them. This applies to organizations (including companies), too; an organization can make a modified version and use it internally without ever releasing it outside the organization.

But if you release the modified version to the public in some way, the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users, under the GPL.

Thus, the GPL gives permission to release the modified program in certain ways, and not in other ways; but the decision of whether to release it is up to you.

-----------
I think to make money from that is not so easy and If we should "use" it, why Apple shouldn't?

-----------

I agree the most parts of eugenia said, there are many problems in communication and cooperation. Maybe community of communities or smt. like that be a solution.

OS X is based upon FreeBSD, and it has always been a goal of BSD-licensed software to allow and enable businesses to take that software and create products with it. After all, the first BSD licensed software was financed with tax payers' dollars, so it's a good thing that this investment is paying off and generating new jobs and new tax dollars. Furthermore, Apple has already bought several Open Source companies and projects and hired their developers. So they are not only making a buck with free software, they are also investing into it, either by owning and financing the respective software, or by contributing to it. Objective-C, for example, is part of GCC and was developed at and by NeXT Computer, which was later acquired by Apple.

Isn't the core OS X kernel based on BSD, not Linux?

h1d said...

sure, the desktop os x apps are mostly closed, but its not just the kernel and a few servers though, openssh, openldap, bind, postfix, apache, samba, and gnu tools, ruby/rails and other 'p' languages, X11, webkit and using sqlite for spotlight, that's quite plenty source opened apps.

and how long do you have to sleep in a cave to think os x is based on linux kernel?

yawn. I have a mac for work, it tethers way more bettah than the other laptop I use, an ubu machine. Aside from that, shit man the mac doesn't do anything better than the lintel box. Heh, you are such a troll Linux Hater, this is great times. I really wish I would have thought of the inflammatory self masturbation route myself. I don't give a damn what any company does as long as it steers clear of my rights as a user. If I don't like what they do, I don't buy their shit. Who pissed on your cornflakes honey? To make you so bitter toward the poor ubu freaks, who really, are just a mirror of your sappy troll self? Maybe you should be Apple Lovah's blog or Steve's Bitch Snivels?... Hee, 'puny boy Red Hat' thats such a troll remark, man even w/ ad block, you have to be making some change. Downstream stupidity is as stupid as you want to make it. Don't update your machine every time it wants too. Wait a bit, check out some of the fanboyz and their angst... Fuck d00d, it's not cable TV or a game console. It's a machine. Heh, your rants though, I will keep tuning into. Hell, sometimes I even feel a little of what you say, although you are a little bitch and know nothing about what 'downstream stupidity' means. Please, keep the clueless anti-ubu, mac ass licking rants up. I'm loving it.

I'm beginning to think that eugenia has taken over writing posts for this blog. It used to have some real content. Now it's just stupid shit, and while it used to be good because it was accurate, it's starting to sound like a crying girl on her period.

eugenia seems stupid enough (and, looking at her comments, she spends enough time here) that she would be just the person to take intelligent criticism and turn it into bullshit.

Macs are, unfortunately, crazy expensive. If they were just cheaper, Microsoft would lose dominance pretty quickly.

Yup, you can bet I hate you too.

h1d said...

and another guy who says macs are expensive... it's funny people keep those years old assumption, but... what good looking, decent performing desktop are there that is as cheap as a mac mini? (don't give me blocky noisy dells)

and well, say same for macbook...

if you say 'crazy = slightly more than cheap line dells', you're right.

Wow, you're my heroine. You still have the patience? I stopped reporting anything to those delayloper since long time ago. Most are ignored (even those with patches), so I end up closing those all by myself.

Abel Cheung said...

IMO Apple is not the only winner. I suppose everybody forgot IBM. Indeed they provide different thing (service and total solution), but they do make big money out of OSS too.

Can anybody count a 3rd winner?

robertl said...

er... Novell & Microsoft both make a chunk of change off this OSS 'madness' right? How about Novell for 3 and M$ for 4?

Abel Cheung said...

Novell? Just a bunch of lusers. Remembered that it needs M$'s charity to survive?

M$... yes, it attracted more people running into SuSE certification, maybe even more than Novell itself do (!); but these cents are just nothing, when compared with how much $ they made every year.

robertl said...

Yeah, I read something the Server 2008 team put up about how much they were tracking w/ OSS nowadays... Good for them. And right about the $$ Microsoft has pulled in, it's really incredible. Too bad that there is so much 'cattle chute' and 'shackles' about their whole take on the market... It's demeaning. But, they are (or have been), very quick to turn a buck on anything not nailed down. this has indeed made them a ton of cash... Maybe w/ all the mac love booming outta this site, Apple will become the next 'pillar of the community' and shove all their genius down our collective throat.

Anonymous said...

I salute you, OSS slaves! Thank you for providing for-profit companies free labor that helps to drive my private stock holdings. You're all working in the software ghetto for Apple and Novell and IBM and Red Hat and everyones else in my index fund. You might as well be carrying blocks for the pharoahs -- or harvesting cotton on some plantation. By all means, convince yourselves that it's a noble cause. The rest of us are laughing our way to the bank at your expense. Dolts... thank God for stupid people.

h1d said...

mysql had a good revenue, now that sun paid them well, though that's their own product and not gathering people's code. mozilla also gets good income through making their search bar default to google as well but that's their own product once again.

maybe not as much, but clamav got bought by sourcefire. and xen was bought by citrix.

and i dont know how much funds are paid on to places like apache groups and freebsd.

and the one that went commercial on its own (while keeping free version as well) is openvpn.

the apps that matter with people who know how to run life...

Vexorian said...

[Don't feed the troll]

Vexorian said...

Anyway, things that must be said:
- Yeah you are right, even a mac fan boy like you gets benefits from OSS, that's how it works, it benefits everyone, should we be happy about it? I am.
- It works the two ways, OS/X adopting cups has actually make us Linux users lives' easier, since for example if a printer "supports OS/X" it would mean it will work in cups, as a matter of fact printer issues used to be a huge problem in the past, now you would barely see something like that in the forums, at least it is not as big as wireless...

I don't really like the look of an apple computer that much. I like my good old P4 I built five years ago, I think I may stay with it for some quite more time, it runs ubuntu hardy without issues, so I'd say it still has plenty of time to live on.

I thought that too, they are geniuses. Cashing in on free shit.

OH, btw, Is your true identity 'Miguel Icaza'?

Anonymous said...

Freetard - not OSStard! The later doesn't have the same comic value...

neomantra said...

One aspect you're ignoring is that a lot of OSS contributors reap personal benefits from open source.

Think of all the college kids getting ready to jump into the real world who need some practical experience for their resumes. Or how about all of the conferences all over the world that are sponsored and paid for by these corporations consuming the OSS that is created (aka giving back to the community). Then there's also folks being paid specifically to develop OSS at some of these places as well.

While the ratio of contribution <--> reward isn't always as fair and balanced as the rest of the business world it's not as though OSS developers/contributors aren't getting anything out of the deal. And often times getting involved in OSS can get your work noticed in ways not otherwise possible, leading you to that opportunity working for some crazy company you'd never have had a foot in the door with otherwise.

Anonymous said...

The only problem with Apple and open source is that they aren't using enough of it and instead still stick to a lot of their proprietary shit.

If Apple switched to the Linux kernel, ext3, and X11 (instead of Quartz), it would be good for them and it would be good for open source.

Anonymous said...

Just change your blog title to BSD haters, and your post would actually make sense. The Linux kernel is protected by the GPL.

Anonymous said...

Vexorian: No, OSX only uses the CUPS framework, not the drivers. Therefor you are totally fucking wrong about "because it works in OSX, it'll work in Linux" bullshit.

andyfitz said...

You're such a biased dickhead..
damn I love your blog

Anonymous said...

Do you post anything without doing research? I assume you pull everything from your ass without anything to back up your claims.

The BSD licence doesn't protect the freedom of the software, the GPL does. Get your fucking facts straight.

ngw said...

1) The OS X kernel is based on BSD like Linux is a real Unix: it isn't. It's called XNU, and it comes from the NeXT kernel
2) The BSD part is a subsystem, it is used for the networking part and for POSIX compliancy (again, Linux wasn't suitable, unless you can find that idiotic thing called "proc" inside POSIX)
3) There's a fuckload of GPL code in the core system of OS X. Never heard of something called "GCC" ? "Samba" ? "Openldap" ? Damn, there's even Emacs in there.

Again, most clueless people in Unix are Linux fanboys. More than Apple users. How could this happen ?
