His post kinda rambles, but let me sum it up for you. Yada yada... Gnome devs have finished all the easy parts of creating a desktop... blah blah... We've copied all the metaphors from other OSes... blah blah ... they've got all the basic pieces which we can now repeatedly break from release to release ... gibberish ... Evolution's still broken ... yada yada ... There's nothing left to do ... nobody has any vision.
Yep there's nothing left to do. Uh huh. No vision. No useful problems to solve.
Wait. I can think of a few.
How about coming up with a development process that makes sure things don't break every release? Difficult? yea, no shit.
How 'bout making it possible for ISV's to ship software for your platform. What? That's really hard? yea. no shit.
How 'bout getting OEM agreements and getting your desktop shipped on a majority of new computers. Really hard too?
How 'bout a working Exchange client? Really hard? see a pattern?
But no, instead you just have to work on the next big thing. Perhaps yet another graphics library. Because clearly, that's the only thing holding Gnome back from world domination.

You say that Ubuntu is always having problems and breaking packages(I don't have this problem), but when was the last time any version of windows actually worked at all. Not to mention the fact that every new version of theirs is just a prettier version of the last. The base system has been the exact same since 95. With Vista they tried changing this, but as anyone who uses it can attest, they failed miserably. It has more problems than a 3 year old version of Ubuntu without updates and just about as much compatibility.
Windows works more or less good since Win2k, so it's almost 10 years.
And, speaking of 'pretty'... a large part of Linux community is obsessed with skins, pretty icons, copying just about any UI that comes out from MS or Apple. Just go to art.gnome.org and check the number of Vista clones.
And, finally, Compiz... what's the use of wobbly flaming windows? It's just a lipstick on a pig mostly without any value, and yet the Linux community shows this as a victory of Linux desktop over Vista.

Wrong.
Windows 2000, XP, and Vista have all been based around progressively newer versions of the Windows NT kernel (sound familiar?) since 1993. Windows 95, 98, and ME were built around newer versions of DOS 7. Your statement could be re-worked as "The base system has been the exact same since 1991" for the Linux kernel, and would be just as true.
Of course windows kernel is rapidly changing and improving. but could you prove it, show it? NO! Because it's source's are closed to us.
And if there are not of these compiz or skins, icons etc, there would be much less users of linux. And we need most is users, so I believe these appearance staff is important but I don't like to use in my comp. too, instead I am using it for propaganda only ;)

GNOME has nothing to do with ISV selling software for the platform. GNOME can run on more than just linux. and GNOME != linux
what i hate about Gnome is Evolution. What a piece of crap! And if i go to the package manager and try to remove it in debian etch it says I have to remove the gnome desktop!! Fuck that! I like gnome and think it looks good but the devs have their heads up their arses if they think they are any different from MS in shipping a DE with compulsory software. Why the fuck can't I have gnome as a stand alone DE?
As for compiz fusion...it shits all over anything MS has produced. Multiple desktops ARE EXTREMElY useful Anonymous idiot #2...unlike MS where you have all yr apps crowded into one desktop, Linux lets you spread the mess out a bit...i do one task per desktop i.e. internet on one, docs on another, file browser on the 3rd and porn on th last one. Where I work I see poor saps with 20 windows open on one desktop and that sucks
compiz is good for hiding porn and that in itself makes it worthwhile.
