Suck my codec

OMG. The Linux Hater fucked up! He got p0wned! He forgot about codec-buddy, one of Ubuntu's great achievements over Windows.

Uh huh. I knew I shouldn't have started that shit with you guys.

If y'all just take one giant fucking step back, you'd maybe notice that 99% of the computing population doesn't even fucking know what a codec is. And you know what, they don't give a shit. You see, they go to youtube, or abc.com, or hulu, click a few buttons, and they're watching the stuff they want to see.

Why? I shouldn't have to tell you this. It's because the codecs that they actually want either ship with their platform, or are installed automatically for them.

Why don't Linux distros do this? Oh, I remember, freedom, or something. Here's a suggestion: what if you guys actually work together with the people that created the technology so that you can ship distros where I don't even have to install codecs? OR why don't you create a stable enough and consistent enough platform that a website can install a codec for me, so that I can get to my porn without having to drop to the command line.

But congrats guys. You optimized the shit out of a problem that most computer users don't have. Go Linux! Go Open Source! Create more problems then solve them!

Besides, we all know that the vast majority of people on Windows having codec problems are just trying to pirate shit anyways. But you know, please keep filling up my RSS feeds with you bitching about how Microsoft doesn't make it easier for you. I mean, clearly, you've already shown your willingness to pay for stuff. I predict Microsoft is going to jump right on that shit. Please hold your breath.

Hey genius, not all codecs ship with windows. Try playing a DVD on most default installs of Windows (yes, even factory sometimes). Try playing a FLAC, APE, AAC, OGG, or any number of video codecs that aren't wmv. Nine times out of 10, you have to get a codec pack, ffdshow, or vlc to play "everything". God, you're a dumb ass.

And again, you're wrong about Linux distro's not doing that. Fedora and Suse both play quite a lot out of the box. Linspire, RHEL, and SLED play more out of the box. Suse comes with Flash. And these aren't preinstalls where the addons were put there by a OEM such as Dell.

K-Lite Codec Pack solves problems with codecs on WinXP.

Actually I don't have any problems with codecs on Linux - I'm using this pack

+ nonfree things from livna repo. But I understand that some people don't know about additional repos and other sh&^

I agree with what you say, although on both Windows and Mac the codec problem is similar as with Linux. On Windows, users have to install FFDShow and Quicktime, and on Mac they have to install VLC. Otherwise, no porn, no torrent videos! :D

But I agree, Linux has these codecs in one place, and these codecs should be installed the first time someone loads a media player (or even installing the OS), asking the user once if he/she wants it or not and remind him/her of any legal implications.

The way it is now, is that you FIRST have to load a video that doesn't work in order to get Ubuntu to ask you, and even then, it only downloads the needed codec and not all the codecs. So a week down the road, you have to go through the same shit to install the other codecs too. Plus, there are formats that Ubuntu doesn't "get" and so it doesn't download all the needed libraries to play it back -- even if they exist.

And then, what pisses me off more than anything else is how Ubuntu treats ffmpeg. They refuse to compile it with AAC (or at least making it work with faac/faad), making PS3/PSP/h.264 exports impossible. H.264 is the most prominent video format and ffmpeg the most prominent encoder front-end on Linux (and a base for 90% of all GUI encoder front ends on all platforms), so not supporting AAC one way or another is just FAIL.

You underestimate the "pirate shit" crowd. Movies are pirated to death. I see A LOT of people "trading" (= "I know this computer guy, he burns me movie CDs"). I'm guessing the ratio between people who actually buy legal stuff and the pirates depends mostly on the average income in the country. How many people buy legal movies in Eastern Europe, Russia, India, China?* No one really gives a damn what Microsoft wants.

* 0.0% is a good estimate I think

Hi dude,

I love your blog.

I am primarily a Linux user because I am a programmer addicted to the GNU userland, but I can see your point clearly, since I suffer every six months and sometimes it gets tiresome fixing stupid problems instead of solving something worth solving. Yes I use Ubuntu :(

Anyway, I had quite a few laughs reading your blog. Keep up.

Eugenia said...

> Haha, I got linuxhater to respond to my post 8)

Where? I didn't read any reply to you. I am not Linux Hater, if that's what you are insinuating. I could only wish I could write as well as LH does, as English is not my native tongue.

The only common thing I have with LH is that I mostly agree with his opinions about why Linux doesn't have more than 3% of desktop market share. These are the types of things I kept saying on my blog and my articles at OSNews.com since 2001 and I got everyone going ape on me back then. I never gave a shit what the Linux community thinks of me, if something is truth, it has to be said, no matter the personal price you will have to pay. That's my philosophy.

The other common thing is the fact that we are both probably really hot.

Tom said...

No, it depends on the idea that everyone is entitled to free (as in beer) goods, which is quite strong in Linux community. I'm sure that most USA and EU citizens can buy all the music and movies that they actually like or listen to.

No one really gives a damn what Microsoft wants.

It's not about what MS wants. It's about patents and trifles like that. Most distros keep decss and patented codecs around in their official repositories, while at the same time trumpeting about copyright, legalities of GPL and stuff.

Mandriva, I believe, is the only big distribution which doesn't promote and keep this stuff on their repositories. In fact, Mdv employees are not allowed to even mention where it can be found. So, they are treating it as a pirated software.

The fact that your distribution doesn't do it, and that you cheer and welcome pirated movies speaks about your regard (and, unfortunately, a large part of Linux community) for the legal system. And, yes, I'm aware that in your part of the world some of it may be legal. It doesn't change anything.

Hey hater,

I really like your blog, I do. But please try to space entries out a bit more, and stick to the "it's funny cause it's true" rule.

Sorry to bore you with my personal experience, but if I try to play a file and I don't have the necessary codecs Ubuntu actually asks me if I want to install them. Yes, or no. I don't really need to know what a codec is, just click the "yes" button and bam, done. Vista forced me to find out which one exactly I needed, browse for it, download a package which then asked me to send an SMS to get a code and be able to install it, then download it from somewhere else.

That's not something I'm making up, this happened to me days ago. In some aspects Linux IS making my life easier and this is one of those, so please make sure you keep your rants to the cases when it's the other way round. There are plenty, no doubt.

Keep the blog funny, keep saying the things no one wants to hear but we can't deny. Don't start complaining about stuff that's just untrue, no one will want to read that stuff.

Anonymous said...

Eugenia: I didn't mean you of course.

tom: Look, I'm pointing out the facts, it's just the way it is in countries with lower incomes (and some goes to different value/political systems as well). I not cheering anything. Automatic codec installation is simply a welcome feature is such environments.

... and to expand my argument a bit more: if it isn't obvious to US / western EU citizens - Linux is actually a nice alternative to a standard pirated Windows install, full of trojaned warez.

Long live Mac OS X. Where people don't have to worry about codecs a other geek stupid stuff.

Fragmentation, division and caos is the best achivement of Linux.

Don't get me wrong, there are nice open-source projects (like WebKit). But they have paid developers (that know what they are doing), that don't just code, but also work on QA, DOCUMENTATION, OPTIMIZATION, MARKETING, USABILITY, DESIGN. To make great products, you need more than just code...

The stupid linux community don't get this. We need money, not just good will, morons.

Your blog is awesome :), still we use Linux because its fun to solve this "problems" :)

I have to disagree this time:

1. Flash is installed automatically in Ubuntu, just like in Windows.

2. CodecBuddy is very useful, codec work in OS X or Windows is so difficult.

Eugenia said...

> Linux is actually a nice alternative to a standard pirated Windows install, full of trojaned warez.

Actually, no, it's not. You are assuming that users want to use Linux's half-assed apps rather than using Windows' well known ones. I mean, if you can indeed pirate Photoshop (and as an eastern european you don't give a shit about IP because it's not part of your culture), why the hell would you ever use The Gimp?

I can tell you right now that people I know in Greece prefer to have a "trojaned warezed pirated" Windows install rather than going through the pains of Linux that no one in their immediate proximity can help them with when they stumble into problems.

Anonymous said...

eugenia: Of course, they all download photoshop. But, you are speaking about power users. I don't really know any "normal" people who actually know what photoshop is. Linux is good enough for cleaning up your father's computer or maybe student type of computer needs - openoffice, youtube, download pictures from camera/phone, watching a movie (yes, a pirated one!;), flash games, msn. voip sucks on linux though. And you may not want to run openoffice on an old comp.

But anyway, most computers are administered[tm] by the neighbour's kid, which means trojaned windows warez in 99.999% cases. And I'm far to lazy to care unlike some of the linux geeks I know ;)

And I forgot to respond to this:

We really care about IP, we sell own proprietary Windows software to rich Germans, Scandinavians, etc. ;)

LH, thank you.
I've just fdisk /mbr'd.

I've been using Linux for 8 years, and it never got good enough.

In it's current state, it might have been a proper competition to windows 98, IF memory was really cheap (I'm looking at you, openoffice.org.. who can still not compete, feature wise, with office 97..).

The only FOSS software that actually successful are the ones which are managed and run like conventional software companies, with management, salaries, and a fucking business model, and then we've about 10 successful projects, and that's it. (oo.o (yeah, right..), eclipse, firefox, apache, MySql, Qt, Linux kernel, Python)).

Also, almost the entire userland desktop applications sucks terribly, with a number of exception that can be counted on two hands, with fingers to spare.

In short, Open Source has been an interesting experiment, and after more than 20 years, we can conclude that it has failed, miserably.

tom: Whether pirate rate is high really do depend on average income, at least partially. I forgot the link of report now, but for some countries, a box of authentic Windows costs 1-2 months of salary. Think about not eating, not leaving home and not using any electricity for more than 3 months in order to buy Windows + Office. You really can't blame them.

About Mandriva, they have done the codec thing in 2 ways:

1. They have been keen enough to ask mp3 patent owner for permission of including multimedia apps. Not many distro would do that at all. Think about how Redhat eliminate support of mp3 in xmms. In this aspect I really have to praise Mandriva people.

2. There was PLF (Penguin Liberation Front) which packages those stuff for Mandriva, though now I'm not sure how it goes. But indeed the site is not mentioned by Mandriva at all, as it is managed by some Mandriva contributors only, no employee would ever touch that.

Eugenia said...

> I don't really know any "normal" people who actually know what photoshop is.

That was just an example, genius. You can use this example for other apps, that "normal" people do care about. You want one? Here it is.

Most people in non-third world countries have a video camcorder. There is not A SINGLE good video editor app on Linux. I have blogged about it about 10 times already, and I have talked to various Linux video editor developers who AGREE with me. Their offerings SUCK (they said so themselves). All 8 of them.

So yes, for these people, it is MORE valuable to pirate Windows with Premiere or Ulead, than to use an OS that doesn't have a video editor that actually works without severe limitations and crashing every 3 minutes.

Same goes for office apps. I can't get my brother to use OpenOffice, not even under Windows. He just doesn't want to.

I'm not talking about OS and office software, I'm talking about pirated movies and music.

And, besides, OOo and AbiWord run fine on Windows. I'm using both, but my needs for office type software are quite limited.

eug.: You're obviously either a geek queen or you just hang out with people who have similar camcorder interests. But you're probably just both. I don't know anyone (expect two of my techie coworkers) who owns a camcorder. I mean, is it really so hard to imagine a person, disinterested in various tech gadgets, who just needs to do certain fixed tasks. If I'm not mistaken, asus is successfully targeting this market with eee pc, but I'm not sure how many get (re)installed with xp.

Abel Cheung said...

They more or less go hand in hand. If a government is unable to control pirating of software, how can it control pirating music and movies?

Yes, they run fine, if you do no more than merely typing words. Do more than that, and people except linux mobs would go crazy. Your boss pass a document to you (with more than just words, editing in M$ office), you edit it in openoffice and return it back, and you'll be shot in the head instantly when boss discovered layout all messed up.

Eugenia said...

> I don't know anyone (expect two of my techie coworkers) who owns a camcorder.

I don't know anyone in the Bay Area who doesn't have one. And my brother in Greece has one too. My brother in law and father in law in France have one each too.

And even if your friends don't have a camcorder, they probably do have a digital camera that shoots VGA video. Try to edit that with Linux and get anything useful out of it without crashing every 3 minutes.

Anonymous said...

eug.: You may just need to readjust your assumptions, I guess. I have never held a camcorder in my hand (and I don't care). But I travel a lot, I've been to most EU countries and also to latin america. Most of the camcorders seem to be owned by japanese tourists :)

I own a phone which does (crappy) videos. I download .3something file via bluet. and I double click it and it works. My gf owns a d. camera and it also does videos, but we have never felt a need to edit anything.

Of course. But, while you could justify using warez for work/school if you really can't afford it, it's hard to justify downloading a tons of music and movies just because it's expensive, or someone think it's God's given right to have any song and move ever recorded.

Yes, they run fine, if you do no more than merely typing words.

As I said, my needs are limited :)

Your boss pass a document to you (with more than just words, editing in M$ office)

If my boss used MS Office I'd expect him to have a license for it. And if my company used MS office I'd expect to have a valid license too. However, if I refuse to use MS Office than it's entirely my problem, and it's expected that my boss and my coworkers be pissed about that.

You're correct, but you know, people don't care. I know some people who (some ignorantly, and some jokingly) call them online version of movies, or online version of songs.

And if my company used MS office I'd expect to have a valid license too. However, if I refuse to use MS Office than it's entirely my problem, and it's expected that my boss and my coworkers be pissed about that.

Indeed.

vlc might solve codec prob on multi platforms, but usually cross platform apps suck in a way or another, because devs are busy keeping it to just build on them instead of concentrate on the features. for mac, you're better off using perian/flip4mac and all is good on quicktime player alone.

it's your blog, so we're just crying but "it's funny cause it's true" rule is nice and keep sorry comments left alone would make this blog nicer imo.

linux (desktops) creates problems on their own, solves themselves with random mobs, creates more problems, progresses tiny bit every year.

Yes, just like people didn't care about digital photography up to 2002. I am sure that if this was 2001, you would tell me the same thing about digicams. And besides, I CARE. My brother cares. My father in law cares. My friends care. That's enough for me to mention video as an example here.

Back to the original topic, if you don't care about video editing, how about some music? iTunes is about 10 times more stable than Banshee/Rhythmbox, and oh, it supports PROPERLY the No1 mp3 player, the iPod. Plus it supports the iPhone.

So yeah, people don't care about video editing, sure. But I am also sure they care about their god damn iPods. So stop nit fucking picking on my examples and making the god damn topic completely off topic just because you can't deal with my ORIGINAL sayings. The topic is: when you can pirate, you prefer to pirate the things you know, rather than going to unknown territories with Linux.

First I mentioned photoshop, you say that no one uses photoshop. Then I mention video editing, then you say no one uses video editing. Well, then, go fucking buy yourself an internet tablet instead of a computer and leave the real business with serious software for us adults. If your only debunking is going to be "no one uses this or that", and you use that argument to further get away from the main topic, then you can consider yourself blacklisted on my reply list.

> and you go all "poor eastern european" on me. you should know better for a greek

Know what exactly? That people in these countries pirate their guts out? I know that. Everyone does so over there, it's normal. The people there do not have the culture for IP (no, not even the people who work in the software industry there). If it's not something that you can grab with your hands, it's considered free to copy. I have yet to meet ONE Greek person in my town who actually PAID for software once in his life.

I don't live in Greece btw, I live in the Bay Area. But I am from over there, and I visit regularly.

Brian said...

Multimedia is not pretty on any platform. The players are trying way too hard to be cool and not hard enough to be free of defects.

The format wars suck, too. I don't care that everyone wants to create their own format (Apple, MSFT). It really sucks that they won't play each others formats. (Hint: converting all my files to your format to play them creates twice as many files, Apple.) Actually, in this regard MSFT has come a long way, they licensed Flip4Mac so that OS X people can just play Windows Media formats in Quicktime.

To you dumbfucks who claim to have never used or don't know anybody who owns a camcorder: You're either lying or you spend way too much time beating off in your parents' basement with your Linux buddies on IRC. Camcorders are barely more expensive than digital cameras. It isn't unreasonable to expect at least ONE Linux distro to cover the capture and editing scenarios without sucking hairy balls. It's why people won't use your crap. They'd rather pirate Windows than use your free crap. Which means, if you want to gain market share, you're goint to need to crack open your wallets and start paying THEM.
