Nice! I just found this site off of reddit: Why Linux is Better.com. Fortunately for me, it reads like a talking point manual for your local neighborhood Linux zealot. I thought we might have a bit of fun with this one.
Forget about viruses. I think we went over that already.
Is your system unstable? Who knew. When a system doesn't do anything, it doesn't crash. Oops, there goes NFS. Locked desktop. Oops I changed my IP address. Locked desktop.
Linux protects your computer. What does that even mean? It sounds the same as the first one.
Don't pay $300 for your operating system... but spend 10 weekends setting it up.
Freedom! Yes, free yourselves form the shackles of sanity.
When the system has installed, why would you still need to install stuff? Because the person that creates my OS can't possibly package everything? Duh?
Update all your software with a single click... as long as you only want the selection and the versions that your distro provides. Don't you dare visit upstream websites.
Why copy software illegally if you can get it for free? Why spend hours making free software barely work when you can pay $50 and get on with your life?
Need new software? Don't bother search the web, Linux gets it for you... only if your distro has packaged it. Need software that's actually useful? Don't bother searching the web. It's not there. If it's even remotely useful, then your distro has probably already included it in a sad attempt to match the functionality of other platforms. Need legal dvd playback? playback of DRM'ed files? FAIL.
Does your digital life seem fragmented? No? Does anyone care? Is it so hard to click three buttons to defragment?
Choose what your desktop looks like... to make yourself feel better about it not being able to do anything. At least its pretty. At least your mom's pretty.
Why does your Windows get slower day after day? Because you install a shit-ton of crap on it? If the same large selection of software could run on Linux, lusers would be having all the same problems.
Do something for the environment. Seriously? how about making serious power saving work for desktops. Who cares about paper boxes. Tons of software on other platforms are distributed electronically. It's not like distributing linux ISO's saves any CD's either.
Enjoy free and unlimited support. By that you mean unlimited quantity, but of rather limited quality.
Use MSN, AIM, ICQ, Jabber, with a single program. Yea, cuz you can't do that on Windows or Mac.
Too many windows? Use workspaces. Yes. Spaces. Or Virtuawin.
Don't wait years for bugs to be solved, report and track them down... then wait years for them to actually get fixed.
Are you tired of restarting your computer all the time? Why yes actually. Ubuntu seems to want to restart when there's a kernel or X update, which seems like every few days.
Let your old computer have a second life...by using a Windows 2000-era operating system. Turns out Win2000 runs pretty damn well on that computer too.
Play hundreds of games for free. The world doesn't need more than freecell and spider solitaire (and maybe pinball). Just imagine the decline in office productivity if there were more games.
Help other countries, and your own. Yes, teach your citizens to program on OS'es which nobody runs, so that when they can locally develop software, there'll be nobody around to buy it. Surely, the rich countries with the cushy jobs are all looking for XO and KOffice experts.
Get a great music player. Your example is amarok? Wasn't that whole gnome 3.0 tabs thing making fun of amarok? oh it wasn't? my bad... I was so certain that it was.
Keep an eye on the weather. Because only Linux can display two digits with an optional C or F in a blurry font, and an icon of a sun.
Sorry, that was too easy. This site spreading all these lies can have Google ads but not mine? not cool.

Games that no ones wants to play for more than 3 minutes. Zero replay value for 99% of the OSS games out there.
Sorry to hear about your ads btw. I remember there was a guy in the comments a few weeks ago saying that he contacted google to ask them to ban your ads. I guess that's the only way for the lusers to fight back your [valid] arguments.
"Help other countries, and your own. Yes, teach your citizens to program on OS'es which nobody runs..."
I've used this very argument myself for years. This was my main gripe about putting linux on OLPC...
'I know how to get 3rd world countries out of poverty, let's give them the chance to pay for some laptops, learn about software no one wants to use or buy (becuase all linux crap has to be open source), and then watch helplessly as they're all stolen by the brutal gangs who run the country with fear and violence'
Great idea, lusers.
>Play hundreds of games for free.
lawl!! Yeah, super fun games like gnometris, ktris, xtris and uhhh like 5000 different versions of solitaire. Wheee!
"Get a great music player. Your example is amarok?"
ORLY? Foobar2000 on win32 does all of it, better, faster, using up less system resources. It does even more. It isn`t fully opensource? WHO CARES!!!?
why does that site try to install a Windows Media Player Extension
Linuxhater, that was too easy.. but typical (for Linux advocacy). I mean - c'mon, is it even worth taking apart?
I'd rather poke some fun at this:
"Until recently, many software publishers considered the software market for Linux to be too small to bother releasing software for it. Though this is beginning to change, most proprietary software does not run within Linux." ( http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/stick_to_windows/software/ )
While first statement is perfectly valid, I'd love to see how "this is beginning to change". Which company (from their own list at http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/items/warez/ starts to work on Linux versions of their soft?)
FOSS advocates are the yapping toy dogs of the technology world.
Fucking useless, loud, annoying, and can't be wiped out.
FOSS is dead.
@we are *nix
Please throw some syntactic counter argument here. Linux is only the kernel, whatever.
@haos
I can tell by your comment that you haven't used amarok. Foobar looks like an old version of winamp by comparison.
Get a great music player. Your example is amarok? Wasn't that whole gnome 3.0 tabs thing making fun of amarok? oh it wasn't? my bad... I was so certain that it was.
Keep an eye on the weather. Because only Linux can display two digits with an optional C or F in a blurry font, and an icon of a sun.
ahahahahahahaha!! *coke squirts from nose*
Brilliant!
Vista actually auto-defragments once a week, and does it really intelligently. It won't start if you're doing something hard drive or CPU intensive, and it'll stop as soon as you do. Meanwhile, EXT3 filesystems still get fragmented (just like every filesystem), only there are no tools to defragment them.
Yay, let's fight :-) Here's my reply:
http://www.manucornet.net/blog/?p=57
"Is your system unstable? Who knew. When a system doesn't do anything, it doesn't crash. Oops, there goes NFS. Locked desktop. Oops I changed my IP address. Locked desktop."
If your NFS server goes away, it's a positive feature that IO calls blocking on it stay blocked until it comes back. Fix your (inexplicably broken) NFS server and bam, your desktop will spring back to life.
Alternatively, if you hate your data, mount the NFS server with the soft,intr options and the IO won't block and your apps will fail to save/open things and you'll lose/corrupt data.
Also, why the hell are you using NFS? No desktop user does that - to even set the thing up you need to have some skills. This is trolling of the weakest and most lame form ever.
I have no idea what you mean about the IP address changing. That never locks your desktop. I do it 4 or 5 times a day.
You fail at trolling, sir.
@Manu
Yet again, you mix between server and desktop use, that's a logical fallacy, since you don't pose a counter argument, but answer to a completely different question.
For desktop uses, Linux and FOSS are useless, slow, unstable shit.
All file system fragment, that's an unsolvable problem, if you want to have anything close to sane performance and disk usage.
Go back to OS basic course, and reread the chapter about file systems.
FOSS is dead.
>Doesn't crash, stable!
My ass is stable. Yesterday I wasted hours trying out Mandriva 2008.1. What a waste of time. Just have a look at the Known Bugs (they call them Errata to make them sound more professional) list. Be sure to read it as it just typical.
I hit more than half of them and more during my short test. I can't even imagine what a catastrophe 2008.0 was.
>9.4 Volume on-screen display stuck on and >volume stuck at 0% in KDE
This makes the desktop totally unusable. Their workaround suggests uninstalling the energy-saving daemon or killing it. What!?! On a laptop this means loud fans all the time. But don't worry the obligatory
This issue will be addressed in a future update.
is here to soothe you. No matter that this bug was first reported in October 2007!
>9.9 No sound in Skype
That's so rich. I couldn't even get Skype to run after install. Neither with the Skype packet for Mandriva, nor with the static binary. What a fuckup! They blame the no sound problem on Skype, because it doesn't support the shiny new unstable sound architecture of the month they included.
>7.1 Mandriva One detects only up to 880MB of >RAM
Uh yeah, way to go! 640 K ought to be enough for everybody.
I thought Ubuntu had issues, but this just insane. I can't even imagine how they sell this shit.
+1. How can one call Amarok a good music player if it still (but not as badly as before) distorts music?
I forgot the best part. I use a Dell Laptop with a Broadcom 4309 wireless chip. There has been a linux kernel driver (bcm43xx, b43) for some time now at it works. You just to supply the firmware, which can't be included due to stupid copyright restrictions.
I knew this and thought ahead and copied the firmware file to a USB stick. During install Mandriva detected the wireless card and asked me if I wanted to supply a firmware and use the linux driver or use ndiswrapper. When I tried to use use the file browser to get to my USB drive, it just wasn't there. How am I supposed to get my file in, if I can't use USB? This was mad enough.
When I tried setting it up later I thought, play it safe use the b43-fwcutter to extract and install the firmware. In short: Wireless didn't work.
I finally got it to work by digging for the assistant from the installer. But it still didn't see the usb drive. I first had to open a file on the USB with conqueror until it mounted. When I selected the firmware file, the whole system crashed. Crashed really hard I mean: Just garbled graphics static.
After a reboot it worked finally.
"Let your old computer have a second life...by using a Windows 2000-era operating system. Turns out Win2000 runs pretty damn well on that computer too."
This is the only statement I really can't fully agree with, not because Win2k wouldn't perform well on that hardware, but because Win2k is unsupported and no longer patched.
I also thought the tabs thing was aimed at Amarok. Otherwise, this was too easy.
+1. How can one call Amarok a good music player if it still (but not as badly as before) distorts music?
It's a failure of Xine rather than Amarok per se. Not that any "ordinary" user would care, though...
"I can tell by your comment that you haven't used amarok. Foobar looks like an old version of winamp by comparison."
You have just proven that you only seen Foobar2000 on screenshots. Amarok, compared with Foobar2000 looks like the poorer cousing of Windows Media Player.
"This is the only statement I really can't fully agree with, not because Win2k wouldn't perform well on that hardware, but because Win2k is unsupported and no longer patched."
ZOMG, i installed win2k on my GF`s PC and it is still receiving updates... She must be a secret MS agent!
Ext3 fragments. Period.
http://www2.lut.fi/~ilonen/ext3_fragmentation.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext3#Defragmentation
It's better than FAT, than again, most file systems are.
@daniel
I've using Ubuntu 8.04.1, probably once a week, sometimes even more ofter.
When I run full screen games, and return to the desktop, X gets stuck. For all intends and purposes, it's equivalent to BSOD, since all my unsaved work is gone, and I cannot use the system until I kill X.
Most of my reported bugs are still open. Several of them are open since I've started using Ubuntu, in 2005. I've been using Linux since 2000, and what always them same mindset, and the same lame answers.
FOSS is at a constant 10-15 years gap behind propriety software, and it hasn't changed for the last 8 years I've been following FOSS develop.
In the software world, you need to run as fast as you can in order to stay where you are, and FOSS moved too slowly
Free software is dead
This person is a troll, it's easy to argue for and against, stop feeding it please.
@Daniel Hansen
"I've been using Linux for 7 years now. Never got a virus, never got a system-crash that wasn't full understandable and easy to repair, never got hacked, no spyware, my reported bugs are all repaired, never had to care about a firewall, licence-keys or whatever."
Well, go fuck yourself, dude. Ive used XP for almost 7 years and never got a system-crash at ALL.
And no viruses, because I don't go to russian porn sites and dont blindly download every shit I see on the net. as for the all the repaired bugs, you are perhaps the first one to be so lucky.
//I've been using Linux for 7 years now. Never got a virus, never got a system-crash//
I've used XP since 2001, and Vista for the last 6 months. I've seen a blue screen at most maybe 5 times on XP, and never on Vista. I've never had a virus under windows. Ever. And I don't use antivirus software. (I'm mystified as to what sort of moron gets viruses and spyware under windows, it must be the Russian porn sites)
Conversely, I've had X die under Linux more then I care to remember. Sure, the OS doesn't go down, but big deal, I loose all my work in the end.
I'd rather feed a windows troll than a linux/gnu/foss/samefuckingbandwagon one!
lol, I'll just make this easy and say that I disagree with everything you've said, and not say too much to follow.
and honestly alot of this is propaganda, like your little install quote, Windows after installing it, has an update system that installs 5 programs onto my PC after I'm done putting it on my PC in the first place.
Also Amarok sux, I prefer the more buggy Songbird for music.
One thing I've got to agree with you on, is the crashing part but really I haven't noticed the OS ever crashing, just the apps in it.
It's incredible how anyone talks about anything, specially when they don't have a clue.
@daniel hansen
And they will save your ass when Microsoft decides to
- no more pay a mp3-licence ?
Big deal. What's the problem with playing ogg on windows. Surely, you
don't need linux for that, as for any other good FOSS format or
software
- abandon their .doc, .xls a.s.o. formats with complete restriction not to use them anymore ?
That's what OpenOffice may grow to be. Backup utility. Still, linux not
required.
- decides to sell Vista 2 (or whatever) for 1000 $ and stop patching
their old systems ?
Well, then more people would just pirate the system or choose not to
upgrade. Overall sales would go down. MS is not as stupid as Apple to
overcharge you for that shit and than sit in their niche relying mostly
on cult/fanboism/elitism for sales. Overchargin for OS simply doesn't
pay.
- not to decide to patch a security faillure because you didn't pay
licence X ?
Dude, security patches are deliberately allowed even for pirated
versions of Windows. Because it incrases the overall safety.
- build systems that are even worse than Vista.
Yeah, that's the FOSS community hope. That someday they will suck more
than we do. Well, bad news they usually care about their products'
reception and have learned a lesson from Vista's poor sales.
All those apocaliptic visions are not likely to happen and they are just FUD - the thing you accuse MS of the most. Anyway, running Linux because of future imagined threat is like wearing a gasmask all the time and living in a bunker.
»Does your digital life seem fragmented?« well, not really, even here on Windows ... and the times that the default Windows file system uses the »man« method to store files (described there) are long gone now. But probably it's easier to tell advantages of Linux over Windows 98.
"I have no idea what you mean about the IP address changing. That never locks your desktop. I do it 4 or 5 times a day."
Ubuntu's network configuration utility, even in the latest version 8.04 (and it's been the same utility for 2 versions at least), is slow as molasses, and locks the workstation while changing the IP. It's a bit better now...
And don't come with stupid "change distro" comments, because I'm not going to waste all the time invested in understanding the deb package manager and utilities, the Debian filesystem layout, and various other gizmos, to change distro to SUSE, Mandriva, Arch, or whatever, which have their own sets of bugs.
On the other hand, Win XP's IP change dialog is as slow as Ubuntu's :)
@eugenia
"Games that no ones wants to play for more than 3 minutes. Zero replay value for 99% of the OSS games out there."
So I take it you're not a fan of Wesnoth or OpenArena? Maybe World of Warcraft is more your style.... which can be run on *nix-based systems by the way.
"I remember there was a guy in the comments a few weeks ago saying that he contacted google to ask them to ban your adsI guess that's the only way for the lusers to fight back your [valid] arguments."
Got a link to that?
@linuxhater blogger(s?)
If you do want to get those ads back, then take a look here:
http://www.azmyth.com/how-to-get-your-adsense-account-turned-back-on/
Appealing isn't guaranteed to work, but hey, it's worth a shot, right? Then again, keep in mind that when you opened your CafePress store shortly after your adsense account was taken away, alarm bells rang with a number of people here, especially me.
@lis,
Again, if FOSS is dead, then why are we here debating at all?
One more thing... the ten weekends setting the system up is very, very weak. Let's take a more hardcore distro, such as... say... Fedora 9.... and let's say it involves the 6 CD set (for those who still have yet to buy a DVD burner)... I had a functioning system up and running in less than half an hour on my Athlon64 desktop. Most of the drivers were already there. With XP and Vista, that's not always a guarantee (unless it's hardware that's slightly older... even then...). Getting the nvidia drivers working would only serve to add eye candy to the system. Still, that didn't take too long at all to figure out. Even with a generic graphics driver, I can still be productive writing letters, doing up presentations, responding to this blog via Firefox, chatting with my friends with Pidgin, listening to streaming audio, and a whole lot more.
And in all fairness, system setup is never truly complete for power users. Power users will always attempt to tweak and change things around as time goes by.
If you want to be truly enlightened, read the following discussion:
http://www.osronline.com/showthread.cfm?link=134095
It is heavily technical, but extremely interesting.
best quote:
> Have you got any idea why on Earth FSD should be bothered about interactions >with > Cache Manager (btw, why such component may be needed, in the first place) >and Memory Manager, Redirector with oplocks _must_ be bothered about these cache issues. Yes, for FAT this is probably overkill, but there are filesystems which must control the caching details. Distributed FSs are also such, but IIRC in Linux they are implemented in user mode using inverted calls. > Now compare it with Linux VFS with its superblock, dentry, inode, >address_space and file objects. Linux VFS is just plain mis-architected. They mandate the use of on-disk file ID for any inode, since inode cache mandates this field and is in turn mandatory for any VFS filesystem. Such an inflexible misarchitecture introduces major dancing-with-a-tambourine in FAT implementation in Linux, since there is a need of faking the file ID concept. Redirectors of SMB and NFS are also similar. Proper VFS is in FreeBSD, everything is polymorphic there, the FS can use its own inode cache (if any - dentry cache replaces it for a huge degree), and the fileID-based FSs are kinda a base class, to which FAT and redirectors have no relations at all. Being UNIX is not good by default. It is just - following some tradition, and there are others, UNIX way has its own drawbacks too - issues introducing threads to UNIXen, which causes the threads to be non-default side-way of doing things in UNIXen for more then 10 years, pathetic "aio" implementation, which is by far worse then Windows overlapped IO, much heavier and slower X11 GUI layer, and so on. As about Linux in particular - Linus is really a poor architect, just look at select() implementation in Linux, which exposes the internal dispatcher wait blocks to every client, also look at general lack of encapsulation in Linux. Windows NT had preemptable kernel since the very beginning, Linux introduced it in 2000ies. Windows NT supports paged memory in kernel, Linux does not. And so on. Also, Windows NT was never designed to be a desktop OS. Its design goal was (and is) - the platform for app servers like Oracle or MSSQLServer, and yes, it is a major player there - Oracle on Windows is the world's most popular database. If we will take other software - open-source and MS's - then the falseness of "open source is technically superior" becomes even more obvious. Look at pathetic MySQL/MyISAM with only table level locks, no transaction durability, no backup (only extremely slow export to SQL text), and pathetic ORDER BY implementation. For most cases, MS's Jet - MDB file - is superior to MySQL. PHP is a good framework, easy and powerful language, rich libraries, good manuals - by it is by far slower then ASP.NET and lacks some major feaures like shared memory objects. Apache is good, but... its architecture makes the aforementioned shared memory objects very hard to implement, and - in turn - its architectural drawbacks is the consequence of bad thread support in UNIXen in 90ies. As about virii and security - the amount of virii and worms hitting UNIX-based webservers through the holes in PHP open-source web apps like phpBB is really amazing, also you can google for "Linux virus" to see the picture. There are architectural advantages somewhere in UNIX - printing subsystem, pipes, general poll and nonblocking IO support everywhere - but there are drawbacks too, like, say, "rwxrwxrwx" and so on.
Oh, I forgot one more thing:
"Ubuntu's network configuration utility, even in the latest version 8.04 (and it's been the same utility for 2 versions at least), is slow as molasses, and locks the workstation while changing the IP. It's a bit better now..."
What type of network adapter do you have and is it onboard or an expansion card?
@danielhanson
I've been using Windows for 7 years now. Never got a virus, never got a system-crash that wasn't fully* understandable and easy to repair, never got hacked, no spyware, my reported bugs are all repaired, never had to care about a firewall, licence-keys or whatever.
So there, freetard.
@lis
Tried following your link, but.... got a Cannot find server error...
@lis,
Ah, I see... part of the address may have pasted wrong into your post or something to that effect... found it... and will look it over.
@we_are_freetards
So, you got *your* specific system with *your* specific hardware (which, I'll wager, you purchased yourself and made sure it was linux compatible) up and running in 30 minutes?
Funny. *My* P4 system with *my* purchased hardware (all of which work flawlessly in XP) took about three days to get Fedora installed, with all devices working.
Linux _on_the_desktop_ is great if your time is worthless.
Heh heh. This little clique is full of angry desperate anti-anti 'tards. It reads like Stormfront for computer OS's! All you need to do is don some white sheets and set some penguins on fire!
@Linux Hater
LOL! Oh, no! Your lame ads got removed and now you're whining that someone else is making free money instead of you! You might have to actually, you know, WORK for it!
Seriously, you get traffic by being a moron who gets enough people talking about his crap that they all spam people on their blogs and in their e-mails to read your crap, so you get tons of hits. You think you should get paid for that? Tell me, what are you doing that you deserve money for? What a moron. You're just like any other person on the street corner being cheap and sleazy, not being worth a dime but trying to get with as money people as possible so you can make money without doing any real work.
Cry me a river.
Some people with real websites that actually contribute something to the community--websites they paid for and fully maintain themselves, not free blogger pages--actually care about what they do, and don't even bother putting ads on their page because it's not about money for them.
You. Are. Teh. Suck. Teh whiney suck, to boot.
Where's all the hate gone ?
LH off on holidays ?
Sounds like your grandma's taken over writing the blog dude !
Every OS is as good as his user.
As good at what? Security? Well, considering reading that http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/2008/06/at-least-we-dont-have-any-viruses.html again. Other than that you can't make linux equal let alone outshine windows in any other possible field. Overhyping it won't do the trick either.
why russian porn sites should be more dangerous than any other porn sites
Because most spam and adware comes from Russia? Surely Russians know how to push things to extremes. Don't fuck with them. (I'm not Russian by any means, no)
One thing I dislike is allowing people insulting other readers anonymously...
Well, the only people who are insulting each other anonymously here, without any arguments are freetards. Which just adds to the flavour.
At least you confirm that open software will save you (digital) life.
Well, seeing how badly my post came out (sorry about that) I don't expect that the message was clear. The point was that Linux on desktop and the whole "free software movement/revolution" is useless as best opensource apps don't require Linux, and some of them (foobar, miranda, mpc, media player classic)don't even run on it! What is more, they don't have Linux equivalents that are half as good (don't try to enumerate them, I've tried them all, they all suck, sorry).
And I don't need your salvation, thanks, as your prophetized apocalypse ain't coming.
Tell me, what are you doing that you deserve money for?
Well shut up, pussy. LH stood up against this annoying overhyped cult-like idiocy that haunts every place in the web. "Linux is so good, why is no one using it? Come on, lets write yet another article, this time it will catch on for sure! Now at least there is something that shake some people of their clouds or at least shut them up. The man well deserves a buck for it. But for you making money is something you would never do, I understand.
Unfortunatelly, most of you seem like a hopeless case. You are always going to repeat that crap "Windows crashes all the time. I use Linux and I have never had any problems". Well, FOAD.
Tell me, what are you doing that you deserve money for?
He provides an outlet for those of us who have grown tired of luser advocates trying to spread their gospel on every other tech site.
Some decent tech sites have been taken over by lusers. OSNews is one of them, just like slashdot you can now be voted down for simply criticizing anything related to linux.
Definitely not the first one to say this, but at least let me try to get this through your thick skulls once and for all.
If you don't like it, don't fucking use it.
Don't like the license? Don't use our codes. Don't like our games? Don't play them. It's that simple. We give you the freedom.
If you're the dumb Windoze user type that can't even install and configure a noobie distro within an hour, sucks to be you. We don't need stupid users like you anyway.
You can go suck Ballmer's balls while I get my OS for free.
Poor you...
I can't agree more... its great to have this blog around... keep posting dude...
@anonymous "We don't need stupid users like you anyway." guy above
I can't work out whether this was supposed to be sarcastic or not.
If not, congratulations on validating mostly everything lh has been complaining about for the last week or so.
@anonymous freetard above:
//Don't like the license? Don't use our codes. Don't like our games? Don't play them. It's that simple. We give you the freedom.//
Don't like Windows? Don't use it. Don't like Windows games? You're an idiot. It's that simple. Run scrambling to the ballsack of Stallman for your daily dose of sweaty sucking.
Too bad the rest of us can afford to spend $100 for an OS. Have fun flipping burgers and d0wnloading yer pr0n while living in your mom's basement.
@bodhibuilder
Hey, moron, you're an idiot. Just because I criticize this blog and its author doesn't mean I'm a freetard. Of course, with your inaccurate generalizations, it's not in any way surprising that you're too stupid to actually think logically about the crap you say.
@.net jerfk-face
HE provides an outlet? Start your own blog if you want. That's an outlet. HE's not doing anything other than spewing his own crap. You could, too. He's "providing" nothing at all, especially when everything about this blog is absolutely free.
@horatio
He didn't even criticize Windows, and yet your response implied that he did. You're an idiot. Also, you keep talking about people with low-paying jobs in their mothers' basements. That's quite an assumption, and it reeks of insecurity on your part. Grow up, imbecile.
If you don't like it, don't fucking use it.
I wish it really were that simple.
Some of us have to use it at work, and some of us can't seem to avoid the cult-like linux followers that dominate tech websites.
If you're the dumb Windoze user type that can't even install and configure a noobie distro within an hour, sucks to be you. We don't need stupid users like you anyway.
If you don't like linux, you must be dumb. Never heard that response before. So original.
You can go suck Ballmer's balls while I get my OS for free.
I already did, which is how I got my free copy of vista ultimate. Looking back on it I don't think it was as bad as having to recompile a kernel to simply install an updated version of an application. So go f@ck yourself, I will bash the engineering nightmare that is Linux all I want. The damn thing has wasted enough of my time, it is the least that it deserves.
Take your own advice actually and go visit one of the millions of linux blogs where you can get your ego stroked for the mere accomplishment of getting a hacked-together OS to install on your pentium 3 emachine. Whoopdy-freakin-doo you installed a variant of unix, I'm so impressed. Have a cookie.
HOLA que tal amigo???

He's "providing" nothing at all, especially when everything about this blog is absolutely free.
He is providing nothing at all but people like myself enjoy reading his posts? Even some Linux programmers like Miguel enjoy this site.
You could accuse this blog of only providing cheap entertainment but even that is still something of value.
But then half the entertainment of this blog is from reading the responses from people like you.
If I came across a .net haters blog I would probably laugh. Linux users however are highly ideological and consider blogs like this to be heresy. This is why some of the longest responses in this thread have been from linux defenders.
That's funny. =) Is it serious?
Are all of you Windows users just like that fat uncool dumb shit who wears the suit on the Mac commercials...just wondering.
Happy virus scanning! :)
Oops, there goes NFS. Locked desktop. Oops I changed my IP address. Locked desktop...
I've changed my IP address plenty of times, and used NFS. It has never locked my desktop.
Don't pay $300 for your operating system... but spend 10 weekends setting it up.
10 Weekends?? I could set up my favorite distros in an hour on pretty much any 32-bit PC.
Of course, I could spend a year customizing my distro if I wanted to -- Linux gives me the power to do that. And installing each piece of software is going to take a few minutes.
When the system has installed, why would you still need to install stuff? Because the person that creates my OS can't possibly package everything? Duh?
Most major Linux distros have repositories that have hundreds of applications available. And, if you can find source code available for anything else you can compile it on your own system. And many Windows programs can be run on Linux using Wine or an emulator. (I was playing Stronghold Crusader on my Linux box just last night.)
Why spend hours making free software barely work when you can pay $50 and get on with your life?
I spend hours each day depending on dozens of foss applications, such as Internet browsers, e-mail clients, word processors, file-transfer tools, that do a lot better than "barely work".
Does your digital life seem fragmented? No? Does anyone care? Is it so hard to click three buttons to defragment?
I've seen Linux tools for defragging, but I never wanted to use them.
Choose what your desktop looks like... to make yourself feel better about it not being able to do anything. At least its pretty. At least your mom's pretty.
My desktop does plenty! And it is really cool being able to make my desktop look however I want it too! Google for some of the cool screenshots that are out there, such as: "http://www.gentoo.org/images/shots/gnome.png".
If the same large selection of software could run on Linux, lusers would be having all the same problems.
I'll have to defer somewhat to your technical expertise on the subject. But I think Linux does better in this area because it uses a more modular approach.
Enjoy free and unlimited support. By that you mean unlimited quantity, but of rather limited quality.
Yes, unlike the quality over-the phone-support you get from MS...
Let your old computer have a second life...by using a Windows 2000-era operating system. Turns out Win2000 runs pretty damn well on that computer too.
You can run ancient versions of Windows on ancient hardware, sure. But why not use a modern "minimalistic" version of Linux that does the job, but also is secure and has people currently maintaining its code and working to keep it bug free.
@ yet another anonymous freetard:
//He didn't even criticize Windows, and yet your response implied that he did. You're an idiot. Also, you keep talking about people with low-paying jobs in their mothers' basements. That's quite an assumption, and it reeks of insecurity on your part. Grow up, imbecile//
He didn't criticize Windows? What the hell other OS do you think he was talking about? OS X? gOS? Maybe OS/2 Warp? HP/UX? Solaris?
Unbelievably stupid you are. No wonder you live in your mom's basement and work at Burger King. Dumbass.
I'm personally sick of the stability argument being trotted out like a show pig all the time.
Work provided me with a T61p Thinkpad a few weeks ago. I put Vista on it (first time I used the OS...figured I should get a first hand looksee at what people like me [techs] are supposed to hate).
-for clarification I had at first wiped it in order to purge the third party crapware-
And I decided to dual boot with Mandriva 2008.
Wellsir, other than the huge memory footprint, I find little to hate about Vista. It's a rock, just like my XP boxes and my Win2k boxes before it. Mandriva on the other hand froze solid the moment I opened up Konqueror after logging in.
In this instance I don't think that crap hardware can be the cause of OS instability, hmmm?
One good thing about Mandriva, though, is the lack of most of the third party crapware that most linux's seem to ship with these days in order to give you that wonderful Ready Out Of The Box experience that they also trot out like a show pig.
I'll try booting it again when I don't have anything important to do, for when I do not need an os that "just works".
For all those posters who claim FOSS is dead:
FOSS is dead? Yet you are using a FOSS application as Wordpress (which is used by your Blogspot website) running in a LINUX SERVER, providing you with more than 99.9% uptime.
I hardly see how FOSS is dead, unreliable and useless....
Just my humble opinion.
Look mom a bunch of idiots that THINK winchot is better than Linux !!!!!
The worst part is that you considerate Winchot VISTA as an Operating System !!!
Oh my god it doesn't Operates any System in the fuck**ing world !!!!!
And if you use Ubuntu of course you are gonna have crappy errors, it's one of the worst distros !
But this webpage surprises me, i didn't thought that windows people were inteligent enough to make a blog (even though it's as customed as a windows desktop xP)
Sorry, i have to make an script to press a button and open Opera, enter a website, paste this post on the webpage and send it, so goodbye!
PS:do YOU live in a basement and work in Burger King or Microsoft?
@horatio
If I were you, I would START posting anonymously. That is, if you weren't still anonymous, regardless of calling yourself "Horatio". No one knows who you are, but if we did, we'd all be laughing at you in real life.
You responded to the anonymous guy who posted at 10:04 AM. He didn't criticize Windows even once in his post, yet you suggest that he doesn't like Windows. You also continue to insist that "anonymous freetards" live in somebody's basement. All the while insisting that they're stupid for not seeing something (Windows criticism) that isn't there (in the anonymous poster's comment).
So, Horatio, if you would care to truly make yourself known, rather than stay anonymous, I would like to publicly hold you accountable for being an absolute moron who, even after being corrected, continues to fail at life. You yourself, however, remain anonymous, and though you may not be a "freetard", and may not live in a basement and make a living serving food, you certainly have the intellect of a 13 year old child who still thinks he's smart for knowing how to tie his own shoes.
"If you're the dumb Windoze user type that can't even install and configure a noobie distro within an hour, sucks to be you. We don't need stupid users like you anyway."
FOSS IS DEAD
I've got popcorn!
Fight!
Right, so he called the user stupid. He didn't once criticize Windows.
Nice try, what with all the trying to avoid admitting you were wrong, but running away with your tail between your legs suits you better.
Also, assuming you're Horatio, why go anonymous all the sudden? Wuss. It's probably because you know you're wrong and now you're afraid I'll make it known publicly.
I've been using ubuntu for over a year now and ... it's a joke. Linux for humans my ass.
I decided to post due to this little link which really ticks me off:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10535/
Flash support on FF for (k)Ubuntu is ridiculous. Look for explanations and you'll find the same answers: it's due to the inaccessible code of flash. Then why does Konqueror run it (well, for half an hour, then it crashes) ?!?
So now the kids in the basement want their own flash.
MAKE THE PROPER ONE WORK FIRST SHITHEADS.
@all anonymous freetards responding to me.
I will now shut up. You all have put me in my place.
Linux rules, all other OS's suck, and *I'm* the one living in my mom's basement. You found me out.
"It's incredible how anyone talks about anything, specially when they don't have a clue."
Linux tw@ts do talk about windows all the time. Most of them have no idea what are they talking about. Why dont you tell it to them?
"If you don't like it, don't fucking use it."
If you dont like this blog, dont fscking read it.
simple. We give you the freedom.
"If you're the dumb Windoze user type that can't even install and configure a noobie distro within an hour, sucks to be you."
Then why do you hail your noobie distros all over the net and mass media? Keep it quiet for ya`ll freetards with no life and tons of free time, to fsck with all those issues.
"We don't need stupid users like you anyway."
Then STFO and dont leave your basements.
"You can go suck Ballmer's balls while I get my OS for free."
Some people have to work for monies. Others can spend days locked up in a basement below the momma`s house, being fed, wiped, washed and paid by their momma, having all the day long to play with this bloody time-eater.
Linux is best to slove problems... that are created by Linux itself.
Eat it luser.
Or the other example... Opera 9.x on KDE 3.5, with flash, over 30 tabs. Same hardware. XP Home on one side, Debian ETCH on the other. Average constant Opera uptime on XP -> 10-12 days, Linux - 15-30 mintues: either flash just locks Opera up, or some heavy flashed website brings X-server down... Choice is yours.
@anonymous freetards, once more.
Before leaving this thread, I just want to firmly maintain that the July 15, 2008 10:04 AM post from anonymous was, by all intents and purposes and by any stretch of logical thinking, bashing Microsoft and/or users of the Windows OS.
But, you probably don't think that's true. Such is choice! Feetards unite!
> Conversely, I've had X die under Linux more then I care to remember. Sure, the OS doesn't go down, but big deal, I loose all my work in the end.
I can top that, how about dumping core in bash!!
> I could set up my favorite distros in an hour on pretty much any 32-bit PC.
Hehe. I like how he has to say 32-bit. GOOD FOR YOU! Welcome to 2008, where the netbsd project provides a single distribution that runs reliably on nearly ever piece of hardware you can find in a server room.
Every time I remind those damn freetards that FOSS IS DEAD, they tell me that webservers are using Linux.
Webserver have using Linux for over a decade, and its server marketshare is shrinking rapidly - it's now accounts for less than 50% of the install base, with most of that loss going to microsoft:
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/web_server_survey.html
FOSS is constrained to a very specific niche, and that niche is getting smaller each day.
Why? Because it's an inferior product.
Vista is rock solid, Ubuntu crashe and burn.
linsux.org would be the supreme "Why Linux is NOT Better" website.
Well done with the article, though.
@horatio
LOL, you stupid noob. You said you were gonna leave, then kept posting.
The poster said you were a stupid Windows user, you replied, "Well if you don't like Windows...." YOU ARE AN IDIOT. Don't you get it? You lose! You were wrong! And you continue to be absolutely wrong! Just give up already you anonymous Wintard.
@anonymous freetard,
Oh, yeah? Well ... YOU'RE the noob! So there! And, your momma dresses you funny! And ... so there!
(still stunned that you can't follow an argument)
"Hundred, thousands of applications in the repository!"
And I don't give a shit about a MILLION of applications if non of them is of useful to me, I wish "freetards" would realize that.
Forget about viruses. I think we went over that already.
Did we? Let's see.
Wait, this sounds familiar. Oh yea, that's right: real software needs that too. Why is there no proprietary software for Linux? because for all practical purposes DEPLOYMENT IS IMPOSSIBLE.
But there is proprietary software for Linux. So what the fuck are you talking about? Everybody knows that Linux is constricted by a small market share, but you're trying toi make a case that there's some kind of technological impediment, and that's just nonsense. I've used the same proprietary nVidia driver with a half-dozen distros. You're full of shit.
I enjoyed reading what you said about KDE4 but the problem here is that when you don't really have anything to say, you're not one to let intellectual integrity interfere with your shtick. I'm open to a challenging point of view, but, sadly, it only took a week for you to turn out to be a lightweight.
And so, I leave you to your faithful readers, (about 000000000000000000000000000.7 of the admitadly tiny Linux user base worldwide) who look to you to explain away why they failed to make Linux perform for them, or to resolve their paranoid delusion that Linux is out to get them.
If Google Ads dropped you, I assume that it was because the advertisers objected. I mean, you know how Google ads works, right? Linux vendors probably didn't like being featured here.
@blackbelt jones
//I've used the same proprietary nVidia driver with a half-dozen distros. You're full of shit.//
And was the installation process exactly the same on each distro? More importantly, was it intuitive?
RAV TUX have been banned from ubuntuforums.org since he had an opinion:

I guess next time I'll use OzOs.
000000000000000000000000000.7 == 0.7
You fail at Math.
Fucking freetard.
Yes, there is propriety software for Linux. Some of it is even great (like MATLAB). BUT
They either create dozens of installers, one for each distro/ version combo (awful overhead, both in development and in packaging), or (like Matlab), create a statically linked dump with a homegrown installer, that will not benefit from security updates and performance improvements from the base system.
There aren't hundreds of applications for Linux - there's about dozen usable ones (not good, merely usable), and huge amount of abandoned chaff.
Looking at Ubuntu's repository is like looking at a nuclear landscape: lots of ruins, with the semi-completed patched up building here and there between the rabble.
FOSS IS DEAD.
Don't worry Linuxhater you will have to eat your word soon enough.
Sources of the FOSS desktop being unstable and appearing slow have been found. Please note appearing slow. A X11 application truly has to operate faster to fell the same speed as a Windows Application.
Just for years us Linux server guys have not given a stuff about the desktop since we don't use it.
Lots of people here are unreseached idiots including LinuxHater.
Windows slow down by the way is undo able and has nothing to do with the ammount of stuff you have installed that only make the effect happen sooner. If you just install a windows machine and leave it running and never install anything else it will slow down the longer it runs. Provided defrag tool only undoes 1 of the 4 causes of the slow down. Really its something Microsoft's ass should be kicked really really hard about. Of course 1 of that 4 come form installed applications services this effects Linux and Windows but windows worse reason so you application does not complain about vista security you create a service to do the task. Linux has released this problem and created the dbus system so applications can start there services on demand and not slowing the system down when they are not needed. The tools to fix 1 of the problems is the windows defrag tool, There are fixes to 2 more of the 4 problems on the Microsoft web sites if you know were. They are not even kind enough to include the tools on the installation cd. Three are fixable design faults like the X11 servers were really lot of FOSS issues with desktop should be pointed. To be correct I think the 4 from applications is also a fixable design fault Linux is a long way along to fixing it.
Guys give up flaming the blog he a idiot.
"I've been using ubuntu for over a year now and ... it's a joke. Linux for humans my ass."
A whole year and it's still complicated for you? Wow, you must need some serious hand holding to get anything done. Honestly you can set up Ubuntu to do everything an average person would ever need in about 2 hours just by clicking some boxes.
It varies, Hellpop. The fallback is a shell script is pretty easy to use, but you need to disable X, and that gave me a hard time at first.
Ubuntu uses synaptic which is a GUI.
Vector just asks you if you want to install the nVidia driver during the distro install. and "yes" is hitting the return.
Anyway the word "IMPOSSIBLE" is not another word for "unintuitive". Look it up.

So now "IMPOSSIBLE" means "impractical" now? Doesn't matter, it's still bullshit.
Overhead nightmare?
Amazing how the auto industry managed to adapt to adapt to manufacturing and distributing all those parts for all those different cars. You'd think that would be a lot harder.
There aren't hundreds of applications for Linux - there's about dozen usable ones (not good, merely usable), and huge amount of abandoned chaff.

I've heard this so many times before, and as usual, there's not a single specific anywhere to be seen, but I guess you get points for being poetic.
I'm only still here because Firefox kept the page after I closed the browser. This time I'm going to close the tab. The success or failure of Linux isn't going to make you less of a loser either way.
I know that there are free software fans that sit around in blogs and talk about Windows just like this. They need to get a life as much as you do.
You know, I am really fucking glad I moved away from linux when I did, these freetard comments have strengthened that movement.
Its an os used by the majority of juveniles and therefore, makes it frivilous for me to use, they change the functionality of it too much and then claim the changes were "better", which 85% of the time they were not.
This troll is weak.
All of you OSS guys fighting away are feeding him. If Linux wasn't making a lot of people worry (and rightfully so), this entire blog wouldn't exist.
Are all of you Windows users just like that fat uncool dumb shit who wears the suit on the Mac commercials...just wondering.
Are you kidding? That guy is awesome! He is way better than that pretentious, humourless douche standing next to him. Those ads singularly put me off buying a mac.
@anonymous freetard #882
//Windows slow down by the way is undo able and has nothing to do with the ammount of stuff you have installed that only make the effect happen sooner//
Funny, I've had the same XP Pro install on my laptop going on 4 years. Runs great. A bit slower than when new, sure, but with regular defragging and the occasional registry clean, it just hums right along.
But you don't like to hear about the millions of users that have experiences like mine. You just like to focus on the experiences of idiots.
And btw ... if you're a linux server "admin" and you can't get an old XP install running smoothly ... remind me never to hire you for anything IT related.
@blackbelt jones

Thanks for summing up why linux will never gain a modicum of marketshare on the desktop.
@daniel hansen: "But if Linux is good or not is not the point."
Um, yes, it is the point. I care. You should care.
"The point is that..."
Redefining the point isn't helping your argument.
"... there are people who care if software is free and not fully managed by a billion-dollar-company..."
First, software is NEVER "free". There's always cost associated with it (eg. your time, your effort, your wasted life -- unless of course your time is worthless). Second, since we've established that software isn't free, it really boils down to whether you want to waste dozens of hours of your own time installing/maintaining Linux -- or, whether you want to pay an OEM such as Dell $50 for a copy of Windows (or buy a fully-preloaded Mac), like the overwhelming majority of sane people. Whether you pay a billion-dollar company or throw your time into the universe's bit-bucket is up to you but, quite frankly, you're an idiot if your time is worth less than $50. Third, there's no reason why you can't run "free" software on Windows or the Mac; in fact, MOST people do. They don't run "free" software on Linux.
"They care if accessing data is free and fully possible."
Wow. Just wow. Because Windows and the Mac are just INCAPABLE of accessing data that's "freeeeee", right? Do you actually believe that tripe you spew? Honestly, I just want to know how deep the psychosis goes...
"And they will save your ass when Microsoft decides to - no more pay a mp3-licence ?"
Oh, I dunno. Maybe just download one of a million 3rd party MP3 players. Problem solved. This is just too easy.
@liz
"Every time I remind those damn freetards that FOSS IS DEAD, they tell me that webservers are using Linux."
I didn't know you were the authority on such matters. Thanks for reminding everyone.
@WE ARE *NIXED!
Various onboard cards like Via Rhine & others. All very well supported.
And I can handle my way around ifconfig && /etc/network/interfaces, thank you.
The network setup thingy was broken (aka painfully slow) for a looooong time in Ubuntu.
Half the Windows haters don't know their way around Windows. They can't troubleshoot, they don't know about the utilities, they don't thoroughly read through their options, and they just install a bunch of random things they find on the internet. All the characteristics of somebody who knows more than the average user but not enough to be a competent admin.
And Linux doesn't crash? Ever visit a flash site with Linux? Oh noes! Flash! System lock-up! Fail! Reboot!
94 trolls? WTF.
Reading it is becoming a full-time job look-alike.
Popularity, eh!
Lookie here:

Another ubuntu rant from a windows-hater. (Dunno. He must be using FreeBSD.) Warning: cyrillic inside.
"Don't pay $300 for your operating system... but spend 10 weekends setting it up."
LOL! How true!
Let me start of by saying that i was on linux for 5 months, operating system it self is perfect but it didn't keep me too long for one reason. Lack of applications, most of the "free apps" are nothing but bull shit (pardon my language, but this true). All of them are either in development stages or completely worthless with missing features that windows app has.
Golly, someone sure sounds cranky.
First of all, I must say, that I'm into Linux, but I've noticed advantages and disadvantages on both sides.
I've never had any problems with drivers, not-working-printers and so on.
Adding new songs to my Ipod (nano) was neither a challenge using Windows nor using Linux.
I don't play PC-games. I prefer to work on my computer, therefore, this is not important to me.
I've never had problems with installions. It takes me as long to install Linux as Windows including all packages (1 hour) and I really wonder about the problems, many of you seem to have in this reference.
The only thing, I'm missing with linux is a with Access compatible database, that is also as usable.
I love the choice of packages with Linux. If you don't like Amarok, take a different program. A choice, one doesn't have e.g. if one wants to clear the IE ultimately from his/her computer (my reason, to try Linux).
Well.... concerning Vista, what shall I say: bluescreens, crushing down all the time (and I don't use windows for surfing the net - therefore, I CAN'T have viruses on my computer), makes the pc slow, the expensive Office-package; a new computer, because Vista didn't run on my "old" one.
XP was by far more stable.
(see this as a field report)
My parents never dared to try a Linux product ("that's too exhausting and complicated"), until Vista appeared.
Now they never want to use MS-products again xD
--
My conclusion:
Linux --> With every new version, I notice progress.
Vista is for me a step backwards. Let's see, what the next version is about..
Friends of mine praise the usability of their Mac... I have to try it myself.
--
I like this site, as fair comments can help the Linux-community to improve.
My wish: improvement of databases (usability and compatibility);
then, I'm perfectly happy. :)
I have to agree with the poster above: Vista has been a step back. Linux continues to incrementally improve. I do use Ubuntu so I'm not familiar with other distros.
I've also had the "pleasure" of being technical support for windows users. Regardless of the OS, most "criticisms" people have originate from the user themselves. In other words (like many of the posts on this blog) the criticisms simply show a lack of familiarity.
Why does your Windows get slower day after day? Because you install a shit-ton of crap on it? If the same large selection of software could run on Linux, lusers would be having all the same problems.
This is because of a mindset that says you haven't truly created a wonderful windows program until you have a tray icon version of your crap that you insist on installing because your users need absolutely need your widget running 24x7.
I am not sure if it's a windows vs. linux issue so much as it is an issue of software developers and their product marketing managers believing their little piece of wankery is the most important piece of wankery in the world.
So yes, whenever I have to do a windows reinstall, I realize that some really cool software accessory no matter how cool it is just isn't worth seeing windows take forever to start up or shutdown. I'd rather do without your truly cool accessory if it means I can get windows to shutdown within 30 seconds and not just hang there for five minutes.
Supporting a windows system is like being a janitor in an incontinent building.
Just by being used, windows creates enough temp crud to slow itself to dysfunction over time. Even the registry fills itself over time as a user does basic operations. A lot of the crud can be figured out and cleaned up but eventually the stuff you can't takes over.
Fine I can legally play a DVD, but if I do, I get a rootkit. I feel so smug.
FWIW, there's a commercial DVD etc. codec package for Fedora 9. I've bought the license when I used Fedora 9. I would gladly do so for Ubuntu as well, if the option existed.
A careful reading of this post shows that Linuxhater runs (or has run) ubuntu and awn. Sleeping with the enemy are we?
Linux is flawed in many ways but I will do anything to never have to deal with windows genuine advantage again. As for macintoys...suffice it to say that I graduated from one button mice and drag and drop years ago.
> Use MSN, AIM, ICQ, Jabber, with a single program.
Ever tried setting up video chat in linux to another msn-using box? Ever tried setting up a webcam.. period?
Also, good luck setting up skype too. With windows, I don't have to jump through hoops disabling pulseaudio and reading numerous tutorials on how to get audio working properly. It just works.
Enjoy a lot of points emphasized. Especially by the hater. Either it is mostly about minor shit I give a damn about, but he sometimes put his finger on deeper and more complicated issues (often X). Keep it up.
Frustrating though to see things like a person being banned from Ubuntu forum (although I personally could do without the Ubuntu hype). And as always going back to the endless, "this app does not work, have to do so and so. Windows just work, Windows just not work. "
For all you guys who use linux but fail to install or "make work" normall apps, try the modular slackware linuxlive derivatives.
They use this thing called "modules", which is basically a squashfs-lzma compressed Slackware package. Installed with one click, or you can even use httpfs and install it without even downloading it.
As for community, I can recommend Slax. Never ever has Tomas M. banned anyone from that forum, no matter what the person might say, mean and feel towards linux,slack or Slax itself.
So basically, this post is mostly an advertiser :D. But some of you seem to could benefit from it, or at least know about the existence of "another thing".
@anonymous
If you're the dumb Windoze user type that can't even install and configure a noobie distro within an hour, sucks to be you. We don't need stupid users like you anyway.
*
Oh cool. I guess that's why Windows is so popular. Everyone's invited. I though Mac users are supposed to be the elitist, "smart" ones. Go ahead and keep on dreaming the year when Linux takes over Windows. It won't come.
experimenta lá a meter o windows 2000 cheio de bugs a correr num amd k6 a 400 mhz para ver o que corre.. experimenta as coisas antes de as criticar..
brat...
reading the comments it is obvious to me that most users posting here don't have a bloody sordid clue about basic everyday computing, which is more of a viability question nowadays, but don't worry, noone expects you to be viable, and has never done so far. unfortunately, and should I say, not yet.
installer muppets: I have just installed and set up windows xp pro AND mandriva 2k8 in little more than an hour, COMPLETELY customised, they look exactly the same, operate as I want, an resemble no factory default for consumer retards. both of them are stable (this has been my only opsys reinstall in the last 3 years including both windows and linux, and just due to buying new laptops).
the question is about attitude, not the quality of opsyses around. if you don't like to be fed what you get, you learn for your own comfort, security, and efficiency. if you like to be fed, you are just cattle. tis also applies to your embarassingly naive topics on "helping the world" you fucking idiots.
it's not linux that sucks, it is you very little narrow mind, the only difference is that while you BUILD UP your linux distro, you CUT DOWN your windows version, to the same effect. from your comments, I also assume that you CANNOT cut windows down to what you use, and CANNOT build up linux either.
how to get 3rd world countries off poverty? to what benefit of yours, for fuck's sake? it is the same mentality that obstacles you from understading the world around you, that stops you from using ANY opsys as you want to, let it be linux or windows or otherwise.
there is no shelter for the tired, no load game for the lost, and most relevant of all, no excuse for the retard. life, is an ultimatum, and you are obsolete.
Linux haters? Pathetic...
Where are the freedom on Windows or Mac? Why the people who pay for the system can't improve it?
When has Micro$oft respected the standard formats?
When has Micro$oft thought in the users before his wallet?
Freedom doesn't have price.
This post is retarded. Seriously, you have a blog just for bashing Linux? Get a damn life.
It seems like the main reason you hate Linux is because you're a lazy shit, and don't like to take the required time to get things running perfectly. It's like life--you get out of it the same amount of energy you pump in.
There's no way you could get the same performance out of Windows XP (or, hell, even 2000) that you can get out of Linux. It's true that there are some idiots who get carried away (personally, I think the idea of Compiz is entirely self-defeating), but with Openbox as a window manager I can browse the web, listen to my entire music collection, and have a fully functioning desktop using less than 100MiB of RAM.
MPD, by the way, is the best music player in existence. Ironically, I'm sure that you and every one of your Linux-hating sheep will scoff at it if you bother to check it out (which I'm sure you won't).
In the end, you have to admit that this blog itself is a testament to Linux's growing popularity. I mean, I've never seen a "FreeBSD Hater's Blog." Makes you think, eh?
P.S.: I hope you look at the name I'm using and dismiss me as immature. That kind of thing amuses me.
I really aprecciate to read your blog. We here from Brazil have learned a lot from your posts. When is possible take a look mine Curso de Informática à Distância. Antonio B Duarte Jr.
Your really so ignorant on this subject. You run this blog through google, guess what? Runs on Linux Servers, and so does 95% on the internet. I am a Linux/Windows Server Admin and can guarantee you 75% of your claims are dead wrong. I have equal experience on both systems. I can tell you without fail Linux properly configured out runs Windows any day.
I will say in one area that you didn't mention, but are close to. To run Linux and be successful with it, you have to have more than your average computer experience.
However honestly every time you receive email, browse the internet, watch you tube videos and nearly every other internet related activity you are using Linux.
Have a nice misguided day. Do us all a favor and unplug your computer now, leave it that way.
