The problem is the downstream distros. There needs to be one distro with varying options to represent as many needs as possible.
Secondly, someone needs to replace X, it's simply broken and old. If those two things happen, then desktop linux might have a chance
But the main problem is that nobody wants to spend their free time fixing the shitty parts of the program.
Take a look at the latest Apple update. That's what you call a fucking serious company. They, as usual, fix all kinds of shit and do it without breaking anything. And no new features. This is important because it is important to have a fixed platform upon which to fix bugs. You can't fix bugs on a moving target.
I think the Linux Hater is a bit too harsh with OSS in general, because I really like a lot of other applications. On my Mac I have:

Transmission (is this OSS?)

Which I all find to be better than any alternative. But open source desktop OS is shit. No offense guys, but you blew it. I think it's nice for server-related stuff, though. But most problems don't seem to come from that level

The problem is that it's more and more difficult for me to be special, because Linux is becoming more and more complex and monoculturist, and more and more difficult for me to configure to my special tastes. And then you go to your neighbour's house, and even though he uses the same distro, he has a version from 6 months ago that behaved differently on most of the things you happen to need, so you have to relearn. Then you visit your friend's place. He uses a different distro, so you have to spend 2 weeks just learning what it actually is you want to do, let alone figuring out how. Your girlfriend says she'd like to try linux too, and she already pre-picked a distro (not the one you use, of course) on the basis of the webpage-theme. A baseball-bat is nearby, accidents happen, trial follows....

The main problem I had with Ubuntu was getting my modem to work with with my HP Pavillion Media Center. I could not download the updates needed to play my mp3's or mpeg's. So I discovered a USB modem that works with Windows and Linux. When I purchased the modem, the manual stated that a Linux folder exists on the cd. It did not! I had called the manufacturer and they stated that I would have to download the software from their website. After some hit and misses, I was able to get my modem to work. When I had my USB modem connected while using Vista, Vista would give me a message that a new device is connected. Ubuntu would not. The Gutsy version of Ubuntu detects my modem when using wvdial, but the Hardy version does not.
I am currenty using both Gutsy and Vista on my home computer. One of the most annoying things about using Ubuntu is that my mp3 files play at one moment and not at another when I restart my computer.
Linux (and Ubuntu in particular) had made me appreciate Vista.
P.S. This isn't the complete story. There are other distros horror stories that are not worth repeating, and so on.

as a long time Linux user and Dev contribute to OSS i'd like to say few things.
i was introduced to computers the first time when i was 29, 7 years ago, made my fist steps with Microsoft
products for about one year and couldn't help thinking that something is totally wrong with MS OS,
then i discovered that there's an alternative called Linux and fell in love ever since.
years passes and now i work as a driver developer under win, and there's one thing i'd like to say,
the Dev's that work in my company are absolutely ignorant, you cant even imagine how stupid they can be,
the first year as a Dev i was really shooked with it, like for example no Dev at our company knows the significant of user permmissions, no one seems to understand that process can run under different permissions and the list goes and and on, in fact we have another Linux intuasist in work that if i'm running into problems is the only one i could ask for advice with, is the only one that i would could a true Dev in our company (besides me off course :)).
and now you want to tell me that open source Dev's are stupid, hell noooooo, fact is that they are top notch compared to any MS Dev i've seen.
and on another subject i think your blog is great and been reading it ever since i've seen it first (no AddBlock), and i really do think your vocice should be heard, actually long time ago..., i hate those fanboys, i think they are the ones making linux the most problems, linux as an OS have it's own problems, and i want the devs or anyone else for that matter to be notified about it.

You're right "Linux Hater". Ubuntu and Gentoo are easily hated and rightfully so. This is from first hand experience, I cannot vouch for the other mentioned distros.
Arch Linux is the only Linux distro I have been satisfied with. Gentoo is simply too much work without enough reward, Ubuntu hides behind ease of use when you can't do anything beyond simple tasks without getting into manual compiling and what not and other distros are similar.
Arch Linux is possibly the only one that practices what they preach about KISS (keep it simple ..), at least the one that adheres to it in the closest manner. It also has AUR which means you will probably never manually configure something yourself.
Let me know if you have any results of Arch Linux users who have used it or been using it for a reasonable period (6+ months) and hate it.

I dislike the number of newbs joining the Linux community because they are learning (unlearning) too much too fast. Ubuntu is massively helping this. So many noobs, so few of them that know why they are using it, or what they are doing with it. Hence the amount of support forums, the number of daft questions, unreasonable expectations and the lame attitude and inability to ask questions intelligently displayed by it's users.
I hope one day that the switch to Gentoo will be as easy (or hard for some) as the switch from 98 to XP.
Linux is easy if you use the defaults your distro gave you, moderate if you want to customise it the way you did with Windows and hard if you want to ignore everything the community (outside of Ubuntu) has been telling you for years.

Just for information, I use Gentoo, I help newbs and I took three attempts (over 10 years) to actually realise that Windows is not actually necessary.

I SHOULDNT HAVE TO DO THAT!!!
