Real time hate

Just wanted to mention, I've started a twitter feed: http://twitter.com/hatinglinux .

I've always thought twitter was kind of lame, but we'll see how it goes.

Wow. If you hate linux so much, then why use twitter? or blogspot? Doesn't m$ have some great substitute for the evil shitty nastiness of a service powered by linux?

Oh yea, everything new on the web since 1997 has been linux powered....

Your blog sucks, your writing style is straight from 2nd grade, and your conclusions show very little analytical thought.

Too bad, because you seem like an intelligent person. You really make some valid points about the shortcomings of linux. If you took a bit more time to organize your arguments, you would come off as infinitely more professional. Now you just come off like all of the slashtards you so desperately hate.

It's funny, because all the things you say suck about linux, they all hold true for every major operating system (drivers that blow, device vendors who could care less about your platform, software written by ADHD monkeys on quaaludes). When linux is your baseline, windows really sucks. When windows is your baseline, linux really sucks.

So many of the truths we hold depend entirely on our own point of view.

So have fun hating! Hope it gets you more than an ulcer.

PS: Try asking someone for edits once in a while. Good writing is usually edited, not just written.

What we need it's neither free nor open source software.

We should create a new philosophy/movement with a different view about the way we understand, develop and use software.

Maybe it could have it's roots in the FOSS movement but it has to be centered around giving power to the users, not companies, developers or highly technical users with a lot of time in their hands.

Holy shit after all these months these comments still fucking deliver.

I love how lusers have these rules that they think you need to stick to when you say that an OS sucks. If you say linux sucks, you've gotta be pro-windows and vice versa.

Maybe they could publish them somewhere where I could check it out. Maybe SVN or something so I could fork it if I didn't agree.

These morons still don't fucking get it. It's not about the GUI, it's about being a goddamn platform.

No stable API/ABI, and upgrading your OS every 6 months just to get new versions of the applications is... insanity.

Linux Hater, I never thought you would be one of those scumbags feeding the twitter hype machine. So, like, you have 2 blogs now or something?

You know deep down inside that the only reason you've started a twitter account is to feed your ego that has been unintentionally fucked up by the attention you receive on this blog. You want a big following and you feel that a good way of increasing the comment stream is to create a twitter page.

It seems like associating yourself with twitter is a step in the wrong direction

Rules that I'd like for making software that gives more power to it's users.

Rule 0: Any being has the right to use the software, human or not, organic or inorganic, with a body or without it.

Rule 2: Protect the user's privacy and his data.

Rule 3: _Updated_ Documentation about how the software works internally and why (source code documentation).

Rule 4: Source should be open. Rule 3 is a dependency for this. Changes to source are allowed.

Rule 5: Use and prefer open/standard file formats/protocols.

Seriously, normal average everyday users don't care if the software is free as in freedom or not.

They just want it to work without hassle , work well and be free as in
beer.

Developers might care about freedom, but I'd say, most care about source code availability and changeability.

Let's give every group what they want and every one will be happy.

Stallman really started it all because he wanted a free as in beer unix with source code so he could play with it and show to his friends that he implemented a lisp based windowing system on top of it. He got it.

Now we want a free as in beer desktop operating system with source code to play with. We want it to be powerful, realiable and fun, and to belong to us, the users, not companies. Let's build it.

Currently I'm looking towards the Syllable project. It seems promising.

Maybe if we work together we can help it become the free desktop OS that we want and that linux never was and never will be.

It has a lot of potential: it's an unified platform designed as a desktop OS from the ground up.

There are other options out there but this one is mature, open source and free both as in beer and as in freedom.

Exactly, you don't want it, neither my mother, developers want it, users don't, they just want the software to work.

That's why I said let's give both users and developers what they want, the best of two worlds.

We have learned many things with FOSS, we can do something better without making the same mistakes, we know better now, we have experience.

This has been addressed here, before.

Oh yea, everything new on the web since 1997 has been linux powered....

Yet IIS has been gaining on Apache at an alarming rate over the last couple of years. I remember when Apache powered something like 75% of all websites, nowadays it's down to the 48% range and falling, with IIS close behind at 35% and climbing.

Your blog sucks, your writing style is straight from 2nd grade, and your conclusions show very little analytical thought.

Although the largely analytical LHB posts are a treat to read (I recommend the entries on the state of sound in Linux, the state of graphics, and "Of Samba and Silos", all three are great articles), It'd be boring if all posts here were of that nature. A lot of the technical points have already been made over the last few months, lately it's been mostly poking fun at the community for shits and giggles. It's entertaining.

. If you took a bit more time to organize your arguments, you would come off as infinitely more professional.

I don't reckon "coming off as professional" was ever an intent.

It's funny, because all the things you say suck about linux, they all hold true for every major operating system (drivers that blow, device vendors who could care less about your platform, software written by ADHD monkeys on quaaludes).

Although this is true, a lot of the problems are overblown in Linux by virtue of an unstable kernel-level API/ABI being presented as a "feature". Although certain problems exist on other OSes, most sanely designed OSes actually provide a stable, standardized ABI/API for developers to work with. Most OSes offer single, standardized frameworks and subsystems to work with, while Linux does not (look at all the competing, overlapping soundsystems, the abandonment of the UNIX sound standard, all of the competing toolkits, etc for good examples of this).

Nobody claims that bad drivers don't exist for Windows or Mac or other OSes, but the primary reason for them is different, and that's where the complaint it.

When linux is your baseline, windows really sucks. When windows is your baseline, linux really sucks.

Not so much, it surprises a lot of OS zealots/fanboys just how many people are capable of using what they deem is the best tool for any given task.

So many of the truths we hold depend entirely on our own point of view.

Agreed.

Apache's fall has halted recently and now the tides are returning in Apache's favor. GWS is based on Apache and increasing too.

http://news.netcraft.com/archives/web_server_survey.html

Anyway, I am not suggesting that IIS sucks or doesn't deserve its rise to power--its quite a credible web server I hear. I would like to see more graphical management tools for Apache (there are some but most are commercial).

There are multiple sound systems but only Alsa or PulseAudio APIs should be adopted by developers in this day in age. PulseAudio works on other Unix-like OSes too; therefore OSS isn't necessary.

There are competing tool kits such as GTK+, QT, WxWidgets, TK/TCL, WinForms (Winelibs and Mono). The thing is all of these tool kits exist for Windows too.

Nobody claims that bad drivers don't exist for Windows or Mac or other OSes, but the primary reason for them is different, and that's where the complaint it.

Many drivers lack features or are missing entirely because some manufacturers refuse to release specifications of their hardware (let alone officially support Linux with proprietary drivers). This leaves developers to navigate their way through a dark cave blindfolded.

Reversed engineered drivers never achieve the same quality as ones with contributed specifications and/or development aid by the manufacturers themselves.

As for the unstable kernel driver interfaces... lets say I rest my case. I won't defend the mess that has become of the Linux *kernel*. However, despite the internal development problems the Linux kernel is still superior to any other Unix kernel in terms of enterprise features, performance, and hardware support.

Davidoff said...

However, despite the internal development problems the Linux kernel is still superior to any other Unix kernel in terms of enterprise features, performance, and hardware support.

Yeah, right. Another stupid freetard comment who knows shit about the outside world or about UNIX in general. Otherwise you'd see that *every* UNIX out there has a way better kernel than the crap that the freetards consider as "kernel".

The Linux kernel just sux in every comparison with grown up UNICES like Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and even the dying IRIX. It's reliability sux, it's scalability sux, it's backward compatibility sux, and it's maintainability sux, too. The documentation also sux, and even more the whole community.

If you want to see a real UNIX operating system that is written by sane people and not some freetardish semi-religios retards and which also runs on your PC then have a look at Solaris. It's free (as in Stallman's f***ing beer), it's reliable, it's enterprise capable, it's very well documented, it's very well suported and it just works!

Linux Enterprise-ready? Yeah, for your local one man strip club maybe. Most real Enterprises with real money to loose don't put mission-critical stuff on the mess what freetards call an operating system (and the few that did still suffer from the crap architecture that makes Linux). Why should any sane person waste time with Linux if he can have a real working UNIX OS (Solaris) for the same price (the cost of a download)?

Anonymous said...

GWS is based on Apache and increasing too

But it isn't Apache. If forks were to count towards what they were forked from, OS X would be lumbed with BSDi, and Linux would be lumped into Minix.

There are competing tool kits such as GTK+, QT, WxWidgets, TK/TCL, WinForms (Winelibs and Mono). The thing is all of these tool kits exist for Windows too.

Indeed, however those toolkits are suppliments to the native, standard Windows toolkit.

There are multiple sound systems but only Alsa or PulseAudio APIs should be adopted by developers in this day in age. PulseAudio works on other Unix-like OSes too; therefore OSS isn't necessary.

OSS is the Unix standard for sound, and it's had software mixing for some time now, so ALSA's reason d'etre no longer exists.

Also, OSS is already implemented on other Unices, it's an established standard, and it works. There's no reason for it to be deprecated.

Many drivers lack features or are missing entirely because some manufacturers refuse to release specifications of their hardware (let alone officially support Linux with proprietary drivers).

Can you blame them? Between the insignificant market share (consider that win2k still holds more than double Linux's market share and support for it is deprecated) and the mess of a driver interface, and fragmentation amongst distributions, there's little to no incentive to support it as a platform. It just isn't particularly appealing.

Reversed engineered drivers never achieve the same quality as ones with contributed specifications and/or development aid by the manufacturers themselves.

Make the platform appealing to device manufacturers and the problem will correct itself, otherwise, Linux people are free to continue enjoying a sub-par experience. It's just asinine to keep shoveling blsame for the sub-par experience of third parties, when they have abhsolutely no incentive to support the platform.

As for the unstable kernel driver interfaces... lets say I rest my case. I won't defend the mess that has become of the Linux *kernel*. However, despite the internal development problems the Linux kernel is still superior to any other Unix kernel in terms of enterprise features, performance, and hardware support

How it compares to other Unix kernels is of no importance in regard to the mess of an API. This is both irrelevant and misguided, I'll bite, all the same.

The only area in which Linux is a clear winner as compared to other Unix and Unix-like kernels is device support, and that is only insofar as quantity is concerned, not quality.

The largest reason it "supports" more devices than the others, is because it's the only one that aims to do so, the other (proprietary) Unices tend to be designed to run on specific hardware, usually due to being half of a hardware/software package.

And the free Unices tend to be designed for specific tasks, rather than general purpose (so trying to support everything under the sun isn't a priority). Or in some cases are primarily a proof of concept (See Minix and microkernels).

The biggest appeal to Linux on the enterprise is the cost and that it runs on commodity hardware (which again, comes down to an issue of cost). That's fine in the low/middle/low-high end.

The high end, big iron and ultra-high end. however, are a completely different ballgame. These markets are dominated by Sun and IBM for the simple reason that Linux can't even begin to compete with Solaris and AIX in terms of performance, reliability and raw power on the ultra high end hardware.

You'll note that although both companies support and ship Linux on the low, middle and low-high ends (and are in fact, two of Linux's biggest (if not the biggest) corporate contributors to Linux and to FOSS in general), they won't even consider considering suggesting it on the highest end markets. Linux is certainly good enough on the backend in many cases, but there are situations where "good enough" just isn't good enough. That's where high-grade Unix made to run on high-grade hardware comes it.

You talk of more support for enterprise features and whatnot, but I have yet to see anything like DTrace, ZFS, 10+ year support cycles (LTS, my ass!), binary compatibility with itself, predictive self-healing, optimizations to run on hardware built not only for the OS running on it, but for specific tasks, hardware-level optimizations virtualization and I don't mean intel hypervisors, I mean stuff like the Rock/II and Niagara/II, etc SPARC CPUs (while Linux can run on Sparc, it does not take advantage of the hardware-level features, and even where is does, or tries to, nowhere near as effectively as Solaris does), and much more.

Even the things that Linux is just starting to support or have Solutions for, Solaris has had for a decade, and in a much more refined, mature, reliable, complete and robust form.

How about device management of AIX's caliber, or SMIT, system-level disk and fs managent, hardware-level grid computing and compartmentalization (as in running a full instance of AIX (or Solaris) which looks and acts like a distinct computer, on 1/10th of a CPU, taking advantage of the hardware-level features of the POWER5/6 that Linux can't even run on natively (PPC-Linux will run on Power, since PPC is a stripped-down version of POWER, with a much, much smaller instruction set, and only a handful of the hardware-level features), support for Blade servers, and the ridiculous scalability of AIX and Solaris.

And when I say scalability in the context of the enterprise, I don't mean supercomputers, so can it. I know you're thinking it, and it's completely irrelevant to the context.

You'd be insane to think commodity x86 hardware can compete with POWER or SPARC in terms of features, reliability, performance, robustness and scalability. You'd be insane to waste a POWER6 or a Niagara II on Linux. And you'd be horribly misguided to believe that Linux is anywhere near as scalable, robust, mature, reliable or performant as AIX or Solaris on this level.

Jebus, I've been in server rooms where the Sparc servers have seniority over 98% of the staff. Hell, I've seen SPARC servers still in operation older than Linux! What's that tell you about reliability?

Linux's broad hardware support is great when you're building servers out of commodity parts, or in regard to that server running out of your closet. But don't kid yourself it's not AIX, it's not Solaris, It's not UP-UX, DEC-UNIX, Tru64 or even IRIX for that matter.

and even the dying IRIX.

Sadly, IRIX is dead and buried along with MIPS. SGI has, in a last ditch effort to stay alive after being de-listed from NASDAQ, is shipping Linux on Itanium hardware :(

They're even sold ALIAS-Wavefront and most of their other stuff :(

But your point is valid, no other operating system, even now, comes close to IRIX on MIPS insofar as multimedia is concerned. Not only were the OS and kernel themselves fine-tuned with balls-to-the-wall optimization for reliability and multimedia performance, the hardware itself was fine-tuned and optimized for it.

Even OS X, while certainly good enough, just isn't IRIX :( And even the core2duo quad-cores are just beginning to achieve power comparable to SGI's last generation of 4-way (MIPS) Tezro workstations :*(

Anonymous said...

And another point about Linux on the high-end enterprise. Linux, of course, can be made to run on and support the hardware-level features of POWER or SPARC, but not out of the box, and certainly not for free.

Novell and Red Hat will provide consultation, at a heavy, heavy premium, to modify SLES or RHEL to fit these needs, but at these costs, lumped on top of what you've already payed for for the POWER6 or SPARC blades to begin with... You're better off going with Solaris (which is both free and already built to run on the hardware) or AIX (which is bundled with the hardware package) and not only get much, much better performance, but you'd be saving a pretty penny as well.

On the high-end, Linux can't even win on cost.

But your point is valid, no other operating system, even now, comes close to IRIX on MIPS insofar as multimedia is concerned.

Well, no. This was true in 1996 when PCs ran Windows95 or DOS/Win3.11, Mac had it's old MacOS Classic and other UNICES didn't care for multimedia at all, IRIX/MIPS was the defacto standard for a multimedia platform. But SGI didn't do shit to keep up with technologies out there, so while IRIX was great when it came to old standards like MJPEG and uncompressed CCIR video (PAL/NTSC/SECAM), it's support for newer codecs just sucked. But even more sucking was the crap MIPS hardware, not only that the MIPS processors were not even close to competition (x86, IA64, PA-RISC, POWER) after 1996 (even the often slow UltraSPARC kicked MIPS' ass), no almost every piece of SGI hardware came with one or more hardware flaws due to stupid engineering.

And even the core2duo quad-cores are just beginning to achieve power comparable to SGI's last generation of 4-way (MIPS) Tezro workstations :*(

Yeah, right, even a low end Core 2 Dou smokes a highend Tezro for lunch. Tezro came with SGIs crap V12 gfx which hasn't been improved since the Octane2 days, the MIPS CPUs still were crap, and the hardware still had it's flaws. Heck, even the XEONs from the Netburst aera (P4) perform better than the Tezros MIPS processors.

The only thing SGI has been ahead was design and price tag.
