I don't know, probably the guys who founded Ahead (Nero AG), Pinnacle, Corel, Cyberlink, Unlead, VSO, etc and the dozens of indy game developers out there making games for Windows? And start dreaming of becoming something you can actually be proud of. Of course, this would require you to sell software for which you haven't relinquished copyright rights (or as you guys call it, "proprietary software").

I understand that, now you may not be the richest man in the world, because you are too young, and so you have to judge software by whether it's free or not (and for that reason you want all software to be free), but if you play your cards right, it won't be like this forever. And yes, you have to work to achieve this.

Oh, and as regards Stallman's teachings about how the source should be free to access and redistribute, can you think of BMW saying "we 've decided to publish the schematics for all of our cars and the ECU firmware source under GPL, so anyone can view them and redistribute them. Sure, the Chinese are going to make knockoffs of our cars in a matter of months and we are never going to recoup the R&D costs, but we are really glad our cars are now 'free'". Please... Not gonna happen. Same for consumer-orientiered software (where you can't sell "support" like redhat does).

Wake up. Don't waste your life like Stallman did, fighting for something that ain't gonna happen.

This just plays into the double standard of community supported software. CentOS is arrogant enough to portray itself as enterprise-class; it's even in the project name and in all caps to boot. They can't just backpedal and say "leave me alone!" whenever someone asks a tough question. That they can't maintain consistent communications, especially when nothing is really going on, is a worrying sign, especially when there exist tools to manage multiple communication methods.

But we know the real reason. They think providing software updates on an inconsistent schedule is enough and communication, QA, etc. is YouDon'tReallyNeedThat(TM). That's just to give PHBs warm fuzzy feelings. Techs communicate via Jedi mind tricks and have no need for project digests.

I don't identify myself as a "Linux pro" so maybe that's why this doesn't apply to me, but I'd be fuckin' lost without my notes. My "Deployment" directory is pure gold. Looking at the stuff a few years down the line I have no idea how I figured out some of the steps. I even need notes to properly set up a VMware image. Linux's API changes so often that it's basically hopeless to expect VMware Tools to work without compiling but there's so much voodoo getting the right versions of kernel headers and dev libraries in place.; May 28, 2011 at 5:52 PM
