I think you went overboard listing his talents.

LOL, they're not talents, they're facts. He writes about tech. Fact, not talent. He refutes the tech press. Fact, not talent. He plays devil's advocate to people like mac fans. Fact, not talent. He calls bullshit on HTML5 replacing flash. Fact, not talent.

Anonymous said...

When he announced he was anon a few posts back.

Jerkface posted as an anon?
How does that make him a whistleblower?

Anonymous said...

LOL, they're not talents

When was he a whisteblower?

TM Repository said...

But he's nothing special. Just another average blogger.

I never said he was anything but "meh". He's usually a decent read, that's it. That's all he's supposed to be. All I said was his focus hasn't changed much; He wasn't the anti-Linux crusader you claim he once was.

You see a sellout, I see business as usual. Nothing more, nothing less.

Anonymous said...

TM Repository said...

When was he a whisteblower?

The Linux malware and virus posts are decent examples. He posted a link to a recent Linux malware discovery that Slashdot and ZDNet buried.

Keep in mind, whistle-blowing is not a talent (in the metaphorical sense).

And since you're hung up on this point, how about explaining away all the other "talents that are actually facts".

Anonymous said...

He wasn't the anti-Linux crusader you claim he once was

His early posts were anti-GPL.

But he changed his focus to be more main-stream when he changed to binplay.

Anonymous said...

He posted a link to a recent Linux malware discovery that Slashdot and ZDNet buried.

That's not being a whistleblower.

It's called posting a link that slashdot/zdnet haven't posted on their sites.

Anonymous said...

Keep in mind, whistle-blowing is not a talent

You should check the definition.

TM Repository said...

That's not being a whistleblower.

Play the symantics game. He brought a threat to light when every other pro-Linux organization were burying.

The link WAS posted on their respective sites and both the pro-Linux tech press and slashdot commenters played it down. Slashdot even tried to bury it with downvotes.

Anonymous said...

To you, perhaps. To me, he's writing bullshit in defence of Flash.

Anonymous said...

Play the symantics game. He brought a threat to light when every other pro-Linux organization were burying.

He is not a whistleblower. Jerkface was linking to someone else's discovery.

Whistleblowing has a very clear definition. What he did was not it.

TM Repository said...

He writes about random crap.

Other than the baseball post, what comes to mind? I guess if a tech blogger writes the occasional post about anything other than tech, they're mainstream and selling out?

He hates on Mac fans. Different to playing devil's advocate.
Comparing them to brainwashed big-brother subjects is just plain hating.

He did the same thing with Linux fans and distro junkies. But that was okay. Because they're losers in their basements rather than losers in Starbucks.

There are zealots in all camps and they're all fair game. This from someone who owns a macbook and argued against some of his claims. So far, my comments have escaped his wrath!

TM Repository said...

He is not a whistleblower. Jerkface was linking to someone else's discovery.

Whistleblowing has a very clear definition. What he did was not it.

Okay, let's look up the definition:

"whistle blower: an informant who exposes wrongdoing within an organization in the hope of stopping it;"

Interesting. So when both a ZDNet author and slashdot commenters are trying to downplay a security threat rather than inform the public, that's not wrongdoing? Jerkface calling them out by posting the link and buried comments isn't being an informant? Does he not want it to stop?

TM Repository said...

Is ZDNet an organization? Why yes, it is. Is Slashdot an organization? Yes.

Did they both commit acts of wrongdoing by downplaying the threat rather than trying to warn users? Yes.

Anonymous said...

So when both a ZDNet author and slashdot commenters are trying to downplay a security threat rather than inform the public, that's not wrongdoing?

Does he work at ZDNet or Slashdot, and reveal from the inside the policy of supressing the threat? No he did not.

He discovered nothing new. He was not exposing a threat. He was linking to someone else exposing a threat.

Now your trying to make him out as some hero, which is kinda sad.

Anonymous said...

A whistle blower has to come from within an organisation. That's the whole point.

Anonymous said...

Is ZDNet an organization? Why yes, it is. Is Slashdot an organization? Yes.

Is Jerkface within either of these organizations?

TM Repository said...

Does he work at ZDNet or Slashdot, and reveal from the inside the policy of supressing the threat? No he did not.

Remember when you said it has a "very specific definition"? Being an employee or working inside the organization is not part of that definition. Just having knowledge of misconduct and bringing it to light classifies someone as a whistle-blower if other organizations are trying to suppress it.

Anonymous said...

misconduct and bringing it to light classifies someone as a whistle-blower if other organizations are trying to suppress it.

What misconduct?

Jerkface is no different from any other visitor to zdnet or slashdot.

How would he know about misconduct that any other vistor wouldn't know?

Anonymous said...

trying to suppress it.

Get real.

A story is not 'suppressed' just because it gets downvoted.

TM Repository said...

A story is not 'suppressed' just because it gets downvoted.

ZDNet actually claimed it wasn't a threat, saying nobody need worry since it would be fixed by the the basement developer army.

Jerkface called them out for pushing their agenda over public safety. Split hairs all you want, its whistle blowing.

(Right about now you can start claiming that I must really admire him for being such an awesome and courageous person or something.)

Anonymous said...

He called them out. Fine.

But what wrongdoing did he expose to the public?

TM Repository said...

But what wrongdoing did he expose to the public?

The actual suppression of the threat. Lying to the public about something potentially dangerous is doing something wrong.

The fact that the danger existed is inconsequential. It's how the danger was handled that he blew the whistle on.

Anonymous said...

Right about now you can start claiming that I must really admire him

Your obviously unfamilar with the term.

Anonymous said...

The actual suppression of the threat. Lying to the public about something potentially dangerous is doing something wrong.

How did ZDNet supress the threat!?

ZDNet may have downplayed the threat, different to supressing it.

And ZDNet was far from the only source of the story.

Anonymous said...

Lying to the public about something potentially dangerous is doing something wrong.

How do you know they were lying, and not expressing an opinion?

Anonymous said...

It's how the danger was handled that he blew the whistle on.

What do you mean 'how the danger was handled'?

Anonymous said...

Being an employee or working inside the organization is not part of that definition. Just having knowledge of misconduct and bringing it to light classifies someone as a whistle-blower if other organizations are trying to suppress it.

In your mind only. from legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Whistleblowing:

The disclosure by a person, usually an employee in a government agency or private enterprise, to the public or to those in authority, of mismanagement, corruption, illegality, or some other wrongdoing.

down voting articles isn't mismanagement, corruption, illegal, or even close to be considered wrong doing.

You are grasping at straws to support your poorly phrased argument.

TM Repository said...

How do you know they were lying, and not expressing an opinion?

Because it was in the security section of ZDNet, but it read like the threat wasn't a threat at all.

A lot of "Linux is inherently secure" rhetoric, downplaying and a "users should have nothing to worry about" capstone.

Meanwhile, similar Microsoft threats are treated like they're teetering on the edge of apocalypse.

Anonymous said...

What post is TM Repo even referring to?
Sounds like he called Jerkface a whistleblower without realizing what it means and now grasps at straws..

Did NBC report these zero-day exploits? No? Then do you think they are supressing them? If I write a blog calling out NBC, to I become a whistleblower?

That answer is NO

Nope, its just people calling bullshit on your argument. We're all "whistleblowers" just to bastardize your bastardization of the term.

What argument? You're splitting hairs over the exact definition of whistleblower. You're arguing the semantics, not the facts. Why? Because you've got no rebuttal to the facts. You're trying, in vain, to use distraction in the hopes that I'll somehow forget the original argument.

1) Jerkface does tech posts.
2) He refutes tech press.
2) He has always done these.

Whether the use of the term "whistleblower" satisfies your definition of the word is irrelevant.

Nonsense. it is entirely relevant that you are misusing terminology in a diabolical use of bad arguments used to feed trolls.

Are those facts or talents?

1) He has played devil's advocate; just because the virus article has him actually taking the side he believes in doesn't mean its the only article he wrote.

2) He's been a whistleblower. The problem is, your personal definition of what that is doesn't compute.

3) He's called bullshit on tech articles of all sorts.

How has this changed since he first started? all these same facts still apply.

Yup, pretty much. Business as usual was the argument from the beginning.

It's entertainment; something to read. I'm not some butthurt-fan-turned-troll who's whining that jerkface sold out. "You used to be COOL, Jerkface! Whaa".

Erm, what's your point? Hasn't the "jerkface isn't special" point been beaten to death yet?

The point has always been that jerkface did this when he started, and he hasn't changed. All that's changed is fanboy's perception that's been clouded by nostalgia.

He misses the good old days when Jerkface used to write articles slamming the tech press and calling them on their bullshit...oh wait.

Anonymous said...

Whenever you point out that jerkface has done douchey things, TM Repo leaps to his defense!

JoeMonco said...

Nothing. Why, should I start ranting about some blogger on the Internet until I drop dead?

Two line snark it is!

So TM Repo, you deny that JF changed direction when he went from JFPlayhouse to binplay?

JoeMonco said...

Two line snark it is!

And dead on at that, mind you.

TM Repository said...

Using TM Repos own personal misdefinition of whistle-blowing, of course

Right, which I got from the dictionary:

"whistle blower: an informant who exposes wrongdoing within an organization in the hope of stopping it;"

"Whistleblowers may make their allegations internally (for example, to other people within the accused organization) or externally (to regulators, law enforcement agencies, to the media or to groups concerned with the issues)."

Erin Brockovich is an example of an external whistleblower. In case you were still skeptical of the definition.

Anonymous said...

So Jerkface is like Erin Brockovich.

Gotcha.

Anonymous said...

And the wrongdoing: Posting on his blog that in his opinion a ZDNet author and slashdot commenters are trying to downplay a security threat.

Not exactly the same as exposing wrongdoing, is it?

Anonymous said...

It's a fiendishly clever plot.

JoeMonco said...

So Jerkface is like Erin Brockovich?

I think that's kind of a matter of taste. Like Mac. Or some other forms of self-mutilation.

TM Repository said...

So TM Repo, you deny that JF changed direction when he went from JFPlayhouse to binplay?

I recall him mentioning he was going to change direction, but it's been more of the same. I guess because he's written a few articles about piracy and Xbox that he must have sold out and be totally mainstream, right?

So if he talks about smartphones is that no longer tech? What about tablets, not tech either? What about Netflix, is that not tech because my dad can use it?!

We need to set some strict guidelines on what random people consider relevant content for Jerkface to be posting!!!

Anonymous said...

Another two line snark! Surely the wikipedia link must be soon!

TM Repository said...

So Jerkface is like Erin Brockovich?

LOL. I was going to remark that you shouldn't get the two confused, but I removed it. Guess I should have left it in.

Both were concerned with public safety in one way or another and neither worked for the perpetrating organization.

Anonymous said...

I'd like to know why TM Repository insists on answering every criticism of Jerkface posted to this blog.

Why is it so TM Repository?

TM Repository said...

And the wrongdoing: Posting on his blog that in his opinion a ZDNet author and slashdot commenters are trying to downplay a security threat.

So a linux enthusiast site and a linux security blog posting an IE threat but burying a Linux threat is open to interpretation? You're fucking desperate.

Anonymous said...

Both were concerned with public safety in one way or another and neither worked for the perpetrating organization.

Not true. If a friend helps you cover up a murder they're an accessory to it. It's still a cover up and they're still responsible.

Just because it wasn't Firefox covering up the exploit doesn't mean that Slashdot and ZDNet are off the hook. They're spreading dangerous misinformation that could result directly in damages.

It's one thing to have a broken staircase in your house, it's quite the other to put a sign that says "staircase is fine, jump up and down on them".

- making a synopsis is tantamount to gushing praise
- whistleblowing is NOT informing the public of an organization's wrongdoing
- Jerkface is Erin Brockovich
- Mac hate is bad, but Linux hate is acceptable
- people go to work to socialize
- working during the night means you have Aspergers
- facts are actually talents

All he has managed to do with his site is attract Queefer and a handful of other nametards who do nothing but troll and counter-troll each other. Hell the only reason he probably didn't ban Queefer by now is because he knows he is a nametard honeypot that's keeping his site alive.

Alternatively, you could just read the post above yours.

High five Joe! Us "namers" have to stick together. When you're a celebrity and raking in those AdSense dollars you've gotta know who your friends are. Amiright?

Or you could just admit you're a big fan of JerkFace(TM) and that your comments were reflecting this.

Meh.

Anonymous said...

I like how obsessed this guy is over AdSense. Someone throws out that maybe possibly Jerkface is attempting to expand his audience and maybe possibly attempting to monetize it (or some other "secret" blog) and TM has an aneurysm and spews diarrhea. Like the idea of monetizing a blog is so controversial. Even Linux Hater tried to do it.

OMFG, TMR is spending an incredible amount of time sucking his cock. Even whores don't stoop that low.

You haven't been on LHB that long then, have you? Every few months a new batch of anon trolls show up here to do some phishing. "HTML vs CSS guy", "Eugenics Guy", etc. We feed them all, letting them paint themselves into a corner with their bullshit arguments.

There's no way one would do so much to protect some random blogger "just because", or "being the devil's advocate".

Except that I wasn't protecting anyone. I was just pulling apart the whinings of a butthurt jerkface fan who's heartbroken thinking jerkface has apparently sold out.

$100 says it's really the same guy who has two accounts.

I already made that joke. That's what the AdSense remarks were all about. I kept referring to myself as the "silent partner" that was mentioned earlier. Keep up.

Whatever happened to the "Jerkface is laying a trap" guy? Supposedly jumping the shark was some grand reverse-reverse-reverse-reverse-reverse-troll scheme that would culminate in a massive 1-2 punch to the GPL that would make computers explode as if Captain Kirk outwitted them at logic.

We're not talking about quantifying "that flash still has a 99% install base", we're talking about quantifying your statement which was:

He calls bullshit on HTML5 replacing flash

For which the argument is calling bullshit on HTML5 replacing flash - not "has replaced" but "is" or "will replace" Flash. Nice try at shifting though.

The death of Flash didn't happen like the loons or the Steve Jobs faithful predicted

Nice shift again, subtle too. This might seem overly pedantic but this furthers my point (my premise) that you are backtracking on the fact that you're backing up Jerkface when you said you weren't as the other anons were painfully pointing out to you.

Sure, when you can't attack the fact, attack the argument, or better yet, attack the character of the person you're arguing with.

You're desperately trying to insinuate that I've been rushing to his defense/singing praises/obsessing. Meanwhile, I'm not the one whining and protesting in another blog about how he's "sold out" and "went mainstream".

Saying Jerkface hasn't changed isn't really a defense. Because if you don't like him now, and he hasn't changed, then it means you didn't like him then either. By making him unpalatable to you is somehow defending him?

At this point you've totally lost track of your argument and you're hoping to distract. You claimed Jerkface sold out and went mainstream, meanwhile he's posting the same shit he always has but you're pretending to be butthurt.

That's up there with calling bullshit on the rapture last week.

-Only a small subset of the browsers currently used (and not only on desktops) support HTML5
-HTML can do video and has canvas, and even if that was supported well (it's not) that still wouldn't make it a flash equivalent, there's still lots of ground to cover, like sound
-There is nothing quite like Flash Pro to author non-flash content, and much less the training that goes with it, and having the mindshare too
-Flash is also useful for playing H.264 videos on browsers/platforms that don't support it natively
...

Only Ohio Ham would be stupid enough to think it could kill Flash.

From then on, anyone who is Anonymous is collectively known as Adam "Queefer" King. Even if he never actually posted anonymously, he has done so much damage to this place with that one comment then he could have ever done with just plain trolling.
