here we go again

Just found out about u1db.

The Ubuntu One team have started work on u1db, a project codename for an easy-to-use database API layer which can work on any platform (Ubuntu, web servers, Windows, smartphone platforms) with the existing native databases (SQLite, MySQL, API layers, everything)

Is it just me, or does this sound like the database equivalent of pulse audio? I can't wait until we have the ultimate abstracted UI. The one that lets you watch porn in the same way across all platforms. It will have to be open source, of course.

Seriously though. If I've learned anything, it's that OSS projects can't make a choice. And when you can't make a choice, what do you do? You support all options! Yay! How do we support all options? An abstraction layer! Yay! Abstraction layers are fun to write! Yay!

The current figure for Linux kernel in embedded devices is 55+ percent in reports you have to pay for.

So where I can I buy the report?

Any of the commercial reports that go down to kernel used including the device dissection reports.

55 percent is the lowest highest is about 70 percent.

Yes the legal dates in the wikipedia if you look down the bottom are in the court documents connected to the article. So you are not require to believe the wikipedia that Andrew Tanenbaum speaking out his ass.

Yes I can understand how 1 year of disruption can be remembered as 3 with the defect of human memory.

Plan an simple Developer and Support company infighting line up with BSD down fall. Yes it really don't make a good story. We fell from grace because we could not get along with each other. It simpler to find a fake third party to blame. AT&T is the fake third party in the Andrew Tanenbaum talk.

Impossible. the z80 is the single most deployed CPU period, used primarily in the embedded space, Linux does not run on the z80 (or any other 8-bit microcontroller). Do the math.

Linux has no hard RT capability, so it isn't used in the rather sizeable realtime sector of the embedded space.

Smartphones and tablets are a very small subset of the embedded space.

In many cases, even embedded devices "running Linux" are actually running Linux in userland, hosted on the L4 microkernel (so you can argue they're actually running L4).

This is all, of course common knowledge. It's also common knowledge that VxWorks and QNX are the runaway leaders in the embedded space (amongst embedded devices that actually have an OS)

Yes I can understand how 1 year of disruption can be remembered as 3 with the defect of human memory.

Do you understand the concept of fallout from legal battles? It's not like the case goes on for a year, and BOOM, it's over everything goes back to normal. Especially in the early 1990s, before widely accessible public internet. Information was not instantly accessible as it is now, so the effects are longer lasting.

Not to mention it costs a lot of money for a small startup to stay in court that long against the likes of AT&T (protip: USL was a subsidiary of AT&T).

Plan an simple Developer and Support company infighting line up with BSD down fall.

That makes no sense, unless you're pretending that the three free BSDs derivatives split out of BSDi (no) or Berekeley itself (also no). The code was put out there, and it was forked.

What screwed BSD is that development was essentially frozen for the duration of the lawsuit. What happened after the lawsuit was a mass refactoring of the code, (see the releases of 4.4BSD-Lite and 4.4BSD-encumbered) which ate up considerable time.

Besides that, there was the long term perception of BSD infringing on AT&T code, which even if not actually true, didn;t make a difference, getting information out back then was not as trivial as it was now. People didn;t touch BSD anymore because "word on the street" was that it was full of AT&T code (even though in reality, the inverse was true due to the SunOS and Berkeley parts of SVR4).

That gave Linux the opening it needed, and slowed down BSD enough to fall behind.

And your previous suposition that Linux and BSD started off at the same time is completely asinine. FreeBSD and NetBSD forked off in 1993, sure. But put into context that 4.3BSD was released in 1986.

In fact, GNU approached Berkely for a kernel before Linux was even conceived. (Berkeley told RMS that if he wanted their kernel, he was free to port it from PDP to 68k himself).

AT&T is the fake third party in the Andrew Tanenbaum talk.

Yeah, because Tanenbaum made up the part about how AT&T's subsidiary, USL sued BSDi for trademark infringement and later for copyright infringement.

Yep, That never happened.

Like another anon pointed out: they're not using GTK on Windows and they'll still be using GTK on Linux... it's just they'll be doing it via this shitty abstraction layer.

It's basically a NIH version of Qt.

Try pulling your head out of your freetarded ass and look at the non-linux picture.

Anonymous said...

But I need abstractions over my abstraction layers! Things aren't abstract enough!

This is also what bugs me so much about java and the many of the 3rd party libraries. All the fucking factories, builders, IoC containers, etc. just to get an object of an interface. The most annoying part is that in many cases there's only one concrete version of the interface anyway. But I nerd loose coupling at all costs, even if I'm never going to swap out implementations, so I'm going to add tons of abstractions on top!

Anonymous said...

But even a lot of frameworks don't have but maybe one implementation of an interface anyway. And all you end up doing is obfuscating things in mountains of config files.

Anonymous said...

BTW interfaces are fine. But needing factory factories, builders for your factory factory and IoC containers with the numerous configs to build a single object is insane all to be "less coupled".

Anonymous said...

from the reddit link:

I work at Google.

The context of the document is hard to understand if you don't know a lot of the terminology of the Chromium codebase.
The document specifically is about eliminating the use of GTK & Win32 from "views", the GUI abstraction layer that Chromium uses on Windows & Chrome OS only. The immediate benefits are for Chrome OS, but this redesign should also work on Windows to enable greater flexibililty there, too.

The document specifically mentions that most of the Mac & Desktop Linux UIs use native platform toolkits and this isn't going to change.

Yes "views" is an abstraction over gtk and win32 but gtk is only used on ChromeOS not on windows, numbnuts. You read misunderstood the statement. If it used gtk on windows it would either have to install gtk, bundle gtk or statically link it on windows and on windows it does none of those.

No. It's the big problem with stupidly written frameworks and idiots who think they need to apply patterns to the extreme. Using Wt or WTL I never HAVE to write procedural code. Nor do I need factory factories, factory builders, IoC containers, etc. And the code is plenty well unit tested.

I agree about the over use of certain patterns (Singleton - which is now an anti-pattern because so many PHP fuckwits have used it even though PHP doesn't fucking save the compiled byte code after running so this is technically and utterly useless) but I don't agree about dissing frameworks although it sounds as though you're only dissing stupidly written frameworks (so %100 of all FOSS).

The problem are all the PHP and ActionScript monkeys who have gotten wind of patterns and are too busy using them to fully understand them. That and all the asshats at Sun Microsystems who insisted upon drawing big fucking UML diagrams to impress their bosses instead of attempting to write a useable fucking API.

IoC containers,

IoC containers are a different matter altogether. IoC containers can make things pretty easy to develop as long as they're not built upon layers and layers of shit - like what Java EE is although the latest incarnation of JEE (6), they've stripped off a lot of the crap.

The downside is that they'll cost you in memory/CPU/bandwidth usage which boils down to more $$$ for hosting.

Anonymous said...

I'm.also talking about things like the spring framework. It's insane how much bloat, config file nonsense and factory factories needed just to save yourself from *gasp* using a concrete object. I mean that's totally coupling yourself! Dun dun duuuuuuuun! As if having to wade through your mountain of undebbugable configs is any less complex than just changing your call to new which should be encapsulated so that your impact is narrowed.

As regards loonix players, i was a VLC fan once (don‘t ask why) but when i saw how inferior VLC‘s filters had become (for example, subtitles are rendered in the video resolution and then upscaled with the video to the screen resolution, plus the upscaler pixelates the reds), i thought “why am not using Windows‘ and OS X‘s infrastructure which is 10x better?“ and went to MPC-HC and Perian running.

Why would anyone sane use Android on a laptop or PC? It's terrible on phones and tablets so why would I want it on anything else?

Yeah, I know they're not going full Freetard, but they actually thought Loonix was an important enough platform to port Flash to. And don't forget what this Adobe employee said.

Because they actually thought Open Sores was a decent software development model, at least one good enough to develop an OS at least 10% of people would use.

That's a bit Freetarded, IMO. So was bothering to hire people to work on Flash for Loonix.

You know, the way you only see things in black and white and twist people's arguments... JoeMonco, are you posting as Anon again?

In 1999 looked like you could make money from a Linux Desktop.

Which might (might) have been true if KDE had stayed proprietary and been sold at a price, as there might have been an interest to build a decent (and stable) graphics and sound stack and generally make the thing usable. But what really happened was that the ambulance chasers of the FSF jumped on top of the KDE devs and it all went to the gutter from there. Of course, part of the blame goes to the KDE group, for targeting the existing user base of Linux (aka Stallman and the rest of the freetards) under the illusion they were a viable audience, instead of selling KDE + Linux to the same audience Windows was sold to. This led to the really wrong assumption the opinions of the freetards mattered. And to the even more wrong assumption that the half assed clone known as Gnome was a threat.

PS: Anyone knows the dlls MPC-HC needs to play Blurays?

Anonymous said...

KDE was never proprietary. From whose ass did you pull that from? It's always been LGPL for libraries and apps have usually been GPL. The F$F whined, though, that the open source license that Trolltech used for Qt at that time wasn't "free enough". Even when it was relicensed to the Q Public License, which was "free enough" but not GPL, and later GPLv2 the NIH syndrome known as Gnome was already in full swing.

"not GPL compatible" that is.

Never mind Kurkydipshit, he's just confusing the QPL, which Qt was licensed under at the time, for a proprietary license.

because it doesn't involve Microsoft/WP7. If it did, you can rest assured that it would be all over the internet and called the greatest batch of disaster that had ever happened to any phone/OS in the history of said same.

Since it is crApple/blAndroid however, it is only a minor niusance that should be ignored by everyone.

MS=bad crApple/blAndroid=not really bad and maybe okay.

Because the Carrier IQ logged messages and phone calls are all an hallucination brought on by the stress of being an interracial couple in early 60s.

Why doesn't it surprise me that Ubuntard likes to create an Ubuntu TV mockup with Serenity? It's quite the same, actually. Whedon hasn't had any success after Buffy/Angel ended. Just like Ubuntu went down the drain after Shuttleworth got delusions of grandeur.

That's from 2010. It would be interesting to see him backtrack on that or admit he was wrong.

Either way, it's dead now. It's a bit of a shame because ActionScript and MXML were shaping up to look half interesting along with the kernel language they had (forget the name of it).

Another example of a platform where the language is kinda cool but the runtime implementation is "teh shite".

On another note, where's the anon that corrected me on IoC. You had some good knowledge. That was an interesting conversation that didn't get whored by hooker groupons and race guy.
