Sounds like another pro-Linux fluff piece to me. Bottom line is that Linux is an also-ran operating system for some very good reasons:

1. Difficulty of installation of programs.
2. Difficulty of troubleshooting.
3. Not really much faster than Windows 7/8 on the same hardware.

Welcome to Chimpout. A black plague is descending upon civilization. That plague is called the nigger. Here at Chimpout we provide up to the minute nigger facts and news stories that are either covered up or buried by the mainstream media. Everything you read here is the truth, gleaned from worldwide sources.

Our message is simple. Niggers are a cancer upon human society.

You will find true stories of brutal nigger rapes, murders and other anti-social behavior, along with a healthy dose of general nigger stupidity that largely goes unreported by the big media outlets.

Sit back, read up and find out the true nature of the nigger, be prepared to laugh, cry and become furious as you discover the on going destruction and mayhem caused by niggers.

We are not a white supremacist site here at Chimpout. We welcome all races, creeds, and colors......just no niggers.

Rapist loses extradition fight

Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, the whistle-blowing website, lost his appeal Wednesday in the highest British Court against extradition to Sweden on rape and sexual molestation charges.

Assange did not attend the 10-minute judgment passed down by British Supreme Court, where dozens of supporters waving placards in support for his cause stood outside the entrance.

Colin, you're right that Linux does not and probably never will match up to Windows as a gaming platform. However, as a business platform to get real work done its head and shoulders above Windows. My customers include businesses who needed the reliability, stability and performance that Windows simply cannot offer. So... if you're main interest is gaming then yes, definitely, you should stick with Windows.

The second comment about "too many distros" is where we disagree. Operating systems are not one size fits all. That's why Windows fits so poorly for so many people -- it tries to be everything to everyone. We now see it failing on everything from phones to tablets to netbooks as people choose better alternatives. There aren't too many distros. There really are only a few major ones and the rest are all specialty builds which suit specific uses and specific needs. Most people pick one distro and stick with it. The choice, however, is the great strength of Linux.

http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20120528&mode=67

I'm trying to think of what "business platform" is code for, because last I checked Linux has no Active Directory and nothing in the way of "business" apps and, no, Libre Office doesn't count as a business app, and running shit in Wine doesn't count.

Of course Caitlyn Martin is a witless freetard fangirl of the sort that Pogson probably wishes he had married.

Hilarious Slashdot thread.

Its better to use free software and pay for lawyers, because you get the source code.

Opportunity cost? Anything to justify this statement?

You _should_ have a lawyer review non-free software licences also, so its not an extra cost.

Indemnity? Not a perpetual task?

Even buying the software puts you at risk of a BSA raid. All it takes is for one employee to install the software on a machine not covered by the license, and you're at risk of serious fines.

LOL, BSA "raid". LOLx2 @ the idea that a company would forego its revenue stream because some dude snuck a Photoshop CD home.

Often, violators are contacted and immediately comply.

No. Usually they are added to some freetarded "Hall of Shame" and make the front page of Slashdot before anyone contacts them. Then, when contact is made and they ask what the fuck is going on, they are told to figure it out themselves and that the hall is perpetual and removal is impossible so fuck you.

Apple managed to avoid it when they built OsX on top of Unix

What a moronic statement. So UNIX == GPL now?

and when they built Safari on top of Konqueror.

Hahahaha, yeah right. Unless you call two years of bitching from freetards as "avoiding". This was one of the most ridiculous GPL fiascos of all because Apple followed the license to the letter and STILL got called out for "violating the spirit of the community agreement".

The creator of Busybox was Bruce Perens who went on to be the 2nd head of Debian where he authored the Free Software Guidelines.

This has to be a troll. Both Debian and Busybox maintainers have said that Perens basically did nothing beyond some basic framework stuff in 1995 that was probably replaced in its entirety before 2000.

The best is the dude that's simultaneously defending the SFLC while railing against Sony and the RIAA/MPAA. What the fuck is wrong with these people? This is willful cognitive dissonance.

Occasionally the sponsored text ad on Google is actually what I'm looking for so I'll click on that. Otherwise I'm in the "can count on one hand" camp in terms of how often I click on banner ads. I was tempted by the Newegg Memorial Day sales on YouTube but never clicked. Not because I wasn't interested (obviously) but because I didn't want to interrupt my video and forgot about the ad by the time the video was finished. This is obviously quite a problem so I question the "conventional wisdom" that overlays are more engaging than side ads.

Plus there's this weird bug that doesn't trigger all the time where if I click on an ad (usually by mistake), every click in the YouTube window pops up a video from the user "undefined". Clearly I've hit some sort of exception but instead of generating an error it takes the code literally and brings me to an essentially random user's video. The end result is that if I want to click on a YouTube ad then I essentially must be finished with YouTube.

ell, somebody must be testing the components and installations of the components or there would be a flow of rejects.

That is rather Stone Age, Mr. Pogson. You cannot manufacture things in the tens or hundreds of millions and inspect them. The Japanese figured that out decades ago. Instead, they and the rest of the world make things that are not defective using processes that they know are in control and not producing defective units. Read about it. You can start here.

Clarence Moon wrote, “You cannot manufacture things in the tens or hundreds of millions and inspect them.”

That’s what the USA thought when it was making DRAM in the 1980s… Finally, no one would buy their stuff and bought Japanese who did test everything. Every assembly and every assembled device manufactured these days has “quality-control” at every step otherwise junk and recalls happen.

Win 8 hate said...

Even Paul Thurrot begins to hate Windows 8:

--

Rest in peace, Aero. I liked you, a lot. Still do. And I’ll miss you. I’m curious why Windows 8 can’t simply include Aero themes in addition to something flatter and duller, especially for those desktop PC-using power users who will primarily use the desktop environment and not care about (let alone need) better battery life. But I’m starting to see more clearly what’s happening here and starting to accept that Windows is growing into something that isn’t so much for me anymore as it is for some mythical tablet user base that may or may not appear in the future.

That brings me back to my central complaint about Windows 8 generally and Metro specifically: This is a neat thing that Microsoft’s building, it really is. But it should have occurred in something outside of Windows. (It should have been just Windows RT, minus the desktop.) Windows 8 isn’t even Windows anymore. It’s a tablet OS that’s been grafted onto Windows like a monstrous Frankenstein experiment.

Yea, and this time I am actually aware that something is different. In all these former attacks it were some outside forces trying to mow down Windows, this time it's Microsoft itself crippling it to pieces.

So, let's say you had a choice between running Ubuntu Linux [and all your hardware worked] or Windows 8 as it stands now, and that's that. What would you honestly choose?

Anonymous said...

it's still about the software

Anonymous said...

Hm.

In that case.. and if I don't depend on a specific Windows software.. probably Ubuntu (with KDE, so Kubuntu). Win 8 just yucks me.

Ha ha, I am here since 2008, way back when LH actually posted his quality stuff. I never thought I would be more disgusted with MS than with the freetards.

Well..

You know I miss the days when Microsoft actually was hated. Until 2007 or so. (never thought I would think this way) MS would be more cautionary about doing shit like this then.

I see lots of damn Win8 fanboys on the internet who approve of every shit Sinofsky is cobbling up. Quoting his shitty blog like gospel. These.. neo winbreds are quite macfag like.

Where do they come from?

For me (another anon), I would stay with Windows 7 and hope that saner minds prevail and that the old desktop be brought back to Windows 9.

I think for me the problems I have with Metro(sexual) are:

- apps store apps only
- how to shut down an app (e.g. goes crazy and starts using 100% CPU, or just shut down an app period)
- how to shut down the system
- I really really use Windows Explorer and the view it provides. It helps me to move files around quickly. Without it, I'm going to be taking longer to move files and such
- control panel? devices? all seem to be hidden
- I want icons whether they are touch activated or not

It's going to be an interesting showdown between Microsoft and its customers I think. I could be wrong.

Blogger's inconvenient CAPTCHA system is the fault of legitimate blog owners.

If you're not familiar with nitecruzr, he's a Pogson-like retired dude who does literally nothing but uncompensated full time shilling on Google forums, so much so that people repeatedly mistake him for an official representative, an image he does absolutely nothing to dispel. This is "that guy" who posts snarky, unhelpful comments on every single forum topic. You know, like "It's your fault! Google can't be expected to do [some basic thing]!"

I'd provide some links but Google has apparently wholesale deleted their entire Blogger support database older than a few months ago. WTF? This third party thread shows the gist of it.

On anything but a phone or an ATM, does anyone here really like touchscreens?

Anonymous said...

The danger isn't Windows 8 specifically but a chain of strategic blunders that leave Microsoft severely weakened. People can say that it can't happen but it did to IBM, Lotus Software, WordPerfect, Quark, etc. All of these, and others, had a death grip of some sort, and they are/were of varying sizes and (perceived) stability. Recovery is possible, of course, but more often the company fails or is absorbed.

I don't know what would happen if Microsoft jumps the shark. Windows 7 can hang around for a while like XP did, but it's hard to believe that 7 can sustain them indefinitely. I'm not on the tablet bandwagon but I'd probably change my mind after 5 years of heavy development there and nothing sticking on the desktop side.

Anonymous said...

No actually. I think it's all a fad. My idea of a perfect computing device still has a keyboard. Those fake screen keyboards are total ass. I wouldn't mind a Windows tablet running a Windows 7 derivative that had an external, ergonomic blue tooth keyboard and matching blue tooth mouse. Or fuck it, just give me Windows version of the Macbook Air.

Was there ever an IT company who was this keen to annoy their existing user base? The only comparable example I can think of is New Coke. And that's obviously not IT.

Microsoft's new "strategey" is as if a tea company would suddenly mix every product with coffee and keep telling the customers that they are dumb fucks for "not seeing the future" and that the combination of tea and coffee is the only sane way to drink tea.

IMHO Apple did it right: release the "mobile" iOS as a seperate fucking OS, and slowly integrate some of the good stuff (like touch etc) back into the desktop OS.

Shut the fuck up, you bastard; I love Halo and I have never supported the crazy Metrosexual idiocy.

Halo was as awesome as Windows 7, and it was made by the best group of game developers on the planet - Bungie (note that they are no longer a part of MS, just like many others, they too have left); to claim Halo fans would like and even support a failed nonsense such as W8 is either stupid, malevolent or both.

Check yourself before you open your mouth again.

So, let's say you had a choice between running Ubuntu Linux [and all your hardware worked] or Windows 8 as it stands now, and that's that. What would you honestly choose?

If you insist on this choice, such as it stands, I would choose Windows - it actually works and even without the Start menu, the desktop is still operational.

I wouldn't use it on a tablet however, the desktop is unusable with touch and Metro is an ugly clusterfuck.

-------------------------

That said, your question proposes a false choice of W8 versus Upoopoo; her is the real choice:

On the desktop, you can choose between WinXP, Win7, Win8 and MacOS - the winners are WXP and W7, which control the majority market share and are tied.

On the phone, you can choose between iOS, Android, WinPhone, BB, Symbian and a few others - the winners are iOS and Android which have basically pushed everyone else out of the market (it seems Android is used primarily by undemanding customers who simply buy whatever is cheap and pushed by their carrier, so it is possible that the only OS that is actually winning is iOS, since Android users don't care for the OS they have and don't use their device as a smartphone).

On the tablet, you can choose amongst various flavors of Android, iOS and soon Windows 8 - iOS has near complete domination; while 'droid tablets do actually sell, they don't seem to be showing up on any statistic - it seems their users don't actually use them, this is corroborated by anecdotal evidence showing that nobody ever sees an Android tablet in use, while iPads are popping up everywhere.

So it seems that the real choice will be between Mac OS and iOS on one and Windows 8 on the other side.

iOS has already won on the phone and tablet and I don't see W8 displacing it any time soon, this of course assumes that users don't react negatively to Metro - if they do, W8 might give Apple's MacOS a chance in the old war for the desktop we all thought MS has won two decades ago.

Yeah, Halo. The game where you're basically fighting the same three guys over and over again while you try to reach a destination then retrace your steps back away from that destination. More overrated MS garbage.

The enemies are:

Covenants:
Grunt (2 versions, three color variations)
Jackal (2 versions)
Elite (5 variations)
Hunter

13 enemies on the covenant side

Flood:
Spores
Carriers
Infected Humans
Infected Covenant

Forerunners:
Sentinels

All together 18 different enemies with 10 very distinct behavioral patterns - at the same time other PC games had clone enemies who all looked exactly alike (remember, Halo came out in 2001) and acted pretty much the same (unless there was a script guiding them).

Halo's enemies looked and also acted naturally - as if they were actually alive and not bots; in other FPS games the enemies acted artifically, and still do, to this very day - Halo from 10 years ago is still better than what other games have to offer (and with the Anniversary edition it looks better as well).

As far as backtracking is concerned - it is well known that Bungie had to finish Halo as soon as possible to be ready for the Xbox launch, so some areas were reused - in Halo the design of the maps is instrumental in providing a good FPS experience (and it shows), they reused their existing maps so as to provide great gameplay, and they changed the atmosphere in them (day versus night) to still give players a unique experience.

The only problem that Halo has, is the fact that MS won't release the never versions for the PC.

No surprise given all the piracy I guess, still, I wish they pull their head out of their ass and release Halo on the best gaming platform there is - the PC (who knows, maybe it can save Win8?).

ReCAPTCHA started out as a way to get old books online, so people could access them for free, an honourable task and something I could get behind.

Then Google bought them out, now ReCAPTCHA is a way for Google to force me to do their work for them for free: checking house numbers, so they can make their mapping services better, so they can either get more ad revenue or charge people for access to the information.

Well fuck that, and fuck you, Google. I'm not doing your work for you and that's why I'm entering 'NIGGERS' instead of a house number; it's also why I'm inviting all of you to do the same. At best--if we happen to get some of the same house numbers--we'll corrupt some of Google's records, at worst we'll not have contributed to Google's shitty forced labour.

Fuck slave labour, let the NIGGERS revolution begin!

So four enemy models with a few extra skins now equals 13 versions alrighty then. Nine enemies with ten behaviors, meh, Quake 3 was more impressive.

But it's market price, is it not? I get you - I'd love to have Windows 8, but when I look at the Metro I gasp. But how reasonable is it for me to expect someone to sell me the product they made at the level of faggotry I want? The beauty of the free market is that it requires consent...no one is forced to sell at a given level of faggotry, nobody is forced to buy at a certain level of faggotry. I can understand a "holy crap" reaction, but in a free market (assuming we're talking about a free market and not some socialist dictatorship), isn't it perfectly fine...and not outrageous? I'm glad the anger of some cannot supersede the rights of others to sell their own product as they see fit. How awful would it be to run a company if you couldn't?

So four enemy models with a few extra skins now equals 13 versions alrighty then.

Different skins meant different enemies, a red grunt was far more courageous than a yellow one (or rather, less of a coward).

A red Elite was a formidable opponent (a standard blue one was, well, standard) and the feared yellow Elites, ahem, golden Elites - called Zealots - were deadly (and very, very rare).

The Jackals were a bit bland and samish, and there was a single version of Hunters.

And I see you have completely disregarded enemies other than Covenant - why?

Anyhow, the point I am trying to convey, is that Halo had incredible variety to its game-play while other FPS didn't and still don't.

Quake 3 was more impressive.

Q3 was monocolour (red/gray), had no enemies, no real story, no real maps, and the multiplayer bots you could play against were a joke.

While Q3 may have been better than other multiplayer FPS games of its time, it was far worse than proper single player ones, such as Unreal, and it was a shadow of a game compared to Halo.

Fear and Loathing and Windows 8 said...

Here's a friendly developer that likes Metro, read his scathing critique of Windows 8:

Fear and Loathing and Windows 8
http://mobileopportunity.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/fear-and-loathing-and-windows-8.html

I’ve spent the last several weeks asking myself why Microsoft chose to remove some Windows 7 features and exaggerate the prospects for Windows 8. There are many possible explanations. It could just be arrogance — they believe they can force customers to do what they want. It could be an excess of designer zeal — designers always think people will fall in love with their creations once they try them.

But it could also be insecurity. To me, it feels like Microsoft is in a quiet panic. When Apple says the era of the PC has ended, I think Microsoft may believe it even more than Apple does. Smartphones eat away at messaging, tablets compete for browsing and game-playing, and who knows what will come next. In the new device markets, Microsoft is an also-ran. I think Microsoft feels it must find a way to leverage its waning strength in PCs to make itself relevant in mobile.
